A welcome return to London for this year's Innovation winner at the Jazz FM Awards. Transcendence re-draws a jazz landscape with music that celebrates the human sprit with warmth, integrity and hope. The latest recording, Work Songs, samples the unknown labourer, the jailhouse, the coal miner, gandy dancer, and stonemason. The album resonates with echoes of protest and rhythms of a call to freedom - and the live performance is set against a stunning and mesmerising visual backdrop
Drummer Jaimeo Brown's trio is the product of long-time collaboration between Brown and co-producer/guitarist Chris Sholar (who won a Grammy for his work on Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne). Both emerging from a generation that appreciates the jazz in hip hop, the artists with whom this duo has collaborated with speaks for itself - Brown with Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Q-Tip, Geri Allen and Bobby Hutcherson; Sholar with Beyoncé, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Robert Glasper, and D'Angelo. The brilliant saxophonist Jaleel Shaw adds a passionate solo voice to music that is sung with fire, healed with love, and immersed in the echoes of protest and the universal beat of freedom and solidarity; at once ancient and modern.

"An imaginative contemporary artist with wide horizons and a game-changing jazz approach, he has lately been exposing his ambitious studio work to the challenge of mixed-media live performance, dramatically unveiled by his Transcendence trio at Ronnie Scott's this week. A unique contemporary jazz venture fuelled by palpably passionate commitment to match its creators' imagination and skill." (**** The Guardian)

"One of the most exciting, experimental, and important albums set to drop this year." (Vice)

The word from the Humberside street is around electronica artist and DJ Revenu. Mentored by Gilles Peterson's Future Bubblers programme, and championed by Hull's City of Culture programme, he brings the second performance of a brand new piece commissioned with PRSF funding for the Hull Jazz Festival - celebrating its 25th birthday alongside our own Festival.

A very special double bill is followed by a live broadcast of BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, with a second short set from Transcendence, special Festival guests and a typically stimulating mix of sounds. Ticket holders for the early evening show are welcome to stay on for this late night event - but will need to book tickets for both shows.
