Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing concert! Imelda May and her band were sensational at the London Palladium on May 18. She is a delightful lady with a stunning voice that she to used to full effect. Her image has changed over the years but the quality of her voice and her live performances remains unaltered. The Palladium is not an ideal venue for pop concerts, it is far better suited to musical theatre and I think this concert should have been held at a London pop venue but the most important thing we learnt was that Imelda May is a stunning songwriter who puts everything into her live performances. I can't believe anyone went hone disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Imelda May surpasses herself Imelda May makes wonderful albums. They bubble with character, style, class, passion and more than a little fun. Her performance at the Palladium last night though transcended everything that she has recorded. The power and intensity of her singing, matched in every beat by the commitment and musicality of her band, was simply stunning. It would have been easy to play a few songs off the new album but concentrate on playing the old favourites to the faithful: easy and enjoyable, but ultimately safe and lazy. Instead, Imelda played - in different order - the whole of the new (deluxe) album ‘Life Love Flesh Blood’. She interspersed some older songs and covers but Rockabilly Imelda was only occasionally in evidence. In her place was a supreme singer of soul, gospel, jazz and bluesy rock who gave everything she had to a very lucky audience. There is a touching candour about Imelda May’s lyrics that means that, whenever she sings her songs, it feels very personal. This lyrical candour, combined with the overwhelming passion and commitment she showed last night to communicate every emotion and meaning at the heart of the new material, meant that the experience of listening was intense, moving, exciting and uplifting. Some of the renditions of new songs surpassed their studio counterparts by quite a margin. This was most apparent in the performance of ‘Should’ve Been You’. On disc, this is a nicely constructed, tuneful song that demands attention and has a memorable chorus. Live, it was transformed by a vocal of irresistible force into an emotional powerhouse of love, loss and the refusal to be beaten. May’s band is quite large: two guitarists, bassist (standup and guitar), keyboardist, drummer, saxophonist, trumpeter and two backing singers. No-one is redundant though. Each band member adds something to the power (that word again), refinement and definition of the overall sound. The Palladium sound technology helped too. Every musical nuance could be heard. It is rare for me to want more by the time the encores have been completed and the concert is over. I am usually fuzzily happy but ready to go. Last night, I wanted another hour. Thanks, Imelda and your band. Exceptional.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Revamped Imelda Great gig. Refreshing to listen to Imelda from a new perspective. Change is good. All grown up as you might observe. On the downside the Cornex (Cambridge) had crammed us in tightly - no leg room and no shoulder room. Chap in front had to sit sideways as he had broad shoulders. We Brits don't like our air space invaded when we've paid for a ticket!
