More Information about LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR OPERA BY DONIZETTI

Winslow Hall Opera will stage 6 performances of Donizetti's effervescent Scottish drama Lucia Di Lammermoor from Friday September 5th through Sunday September 14th 2014. Based on Sir Walter Scott's novel of 1819, The Bride of Lammermoor, Donizetti wrote Lucia in 1835. Then, as now, there was strong interest in the history and culture of Scotland. Indeed the referendum on Scottish independence takes place only 4 days after the final performance. A darkly romantic tale of family honour, betrayal and madness, the story concerns the emotionally fragile Lucy Ashton (Lucia) who is caught in a feud between her own family and that of the Ravenswoods. The setting is the Lammermuir Hills of Scotland in the 17th century. Lucia Di Lammermoor is Italian Romantic opera at its most powerful and dramatic, and as such, is the jewel in the crown of Bel Canto opera.
