THE PRINCE OF THE PAGODAS Booking Period 26 - 29 March 2014 David Bintley's new interpretation of The Prince of the Pagodas will be one of the most exciting UK ballet premieres of 2014. This imaginative reworking of a classic fairytale celebrates the power of family love. With spectacular and imaginative costumes from War Horse designer Rae Smith and inspired by Benjamin Britten's only full-length ballet score, these London premiere performances are the culmination of the year-long Britten 100 celebrations. Through a lonely childhood Princess Sakura mourns her brother's death and the slow disintegration of her father the Emperor, whose wicked new wife takes control of his kingdom. Presented with four powerful and wealthy suitors, Sakura's memories of the true love she felt for her brother gives her courage to reject them. Determined not to follow her stepmother's bidding, when a fifth suitor arrives - a scaly Salamander, both fascinating and repellent - Sakura throws herself on his mercy. After a long and dangerous journey through earth, air, fire and water, they arrive at the Salamander's kingdom, but Sakura's adventure has only just begun. The Prince of the Pagodas was rapturously received by audiences and critics at its premiere in Japan in 2011. Don't miss your opportunity to enjoy the splendour of the Chrysanthemum Kingdom, and join Sakura on her fantastical journey through the elements. The Prince of the Pagodas is supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Patrick Trust, the John Feeney Charitable Trust, the Foyle Foundation, the Boltini Trust, the Perry Family Charitable Trust, the City of Birmingham Orchestral Endowment Fund, the Leche Trust, the Owen Family Trust, the Britten-Pears Foundation, Birmingham Royal Ballet's New Production Syndicate and the Director's Appeal 2013-14.
