What people are saying about The Unthanks - How Wild The Wind Blows

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A magical live performance My partner and I went to see this not really knowing much about Molly Drake but we're really captivated by the music, poetry and atmosphere. We bought two cds of the unthanks at the gig!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect Unthanks concert! A perfectly balanced concert giving creedence to previously unknown material from the Drake estate. The material was perfectly suited to The Unthanks style who treated it with warmth and sensitivity. An evening of charm and musicality in a perfect setting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unthanks booking and access to venue Great gig but access to gig was v slow and cold due to slow check-in. Venue was also v cold due to main door being open so long

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sublime storytelling A very different kind of gig, where the star of the show isn't actually present or living and the artists on stage are genuinely reverent and magnaminous in their handing over of the limelight. The music and poetry of Molly Drake is beautifully interpreted in The Unthanks' own inimitable style and delivered with great purity and simplicity. The accompanying set, voiceover, stills and footage from the Drake estate is similarly affecting and the combined result is enthralling and endlessly touching.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Would have been better somewhere else Bought tickets for this 6 months prior to the night itself - a group of 7 of us looked forward to it for ages. Originally planned for another venue, it had been moved to St Bartholemew's Church, presumably for capacity reasons. Must have been 800 or so expectant souls in there last night. Prior experience at the venue (I Am Kloot, on a freezing night several years back) made me apprehensive. That night the cold and the acoustics made for a gruelling experience for band and friends alike. Last night was the same, although not bitterly cold inside you couldn't really call it warm. And the acoustics were everything you'd expect from a building with the dimensions and decor of St Bart's which if was designed with music in mind was surely for choral church music, not a sensitive rendition of a folk concept album. Consequently everything was bathed in a swampy reverb that's probably still audible now, some 24 hours after the band took their final bow. Which meant that the delicate nature of the performances, and the spoken words were lost in the cavernous space. The material was not familiar, the album not having been released yet, so it was a night where you wanted to pay attention. Thankfully, some moments still got through the unintentional wall of sound, and Gabrielle Drake's reading of the spoken word interludes was a lovely touch. Despite the biological connection, the Unthank sisters possess strikingly different voices. Rachel's is crystal clear and has a story-telling quality, while Becky's is a gorgeous, mesmeric, breathy instrument that can move a man of a certain age to tears. Looking forward to hearing the album when it comes out - from what I could tell there's some great stuff in there. Moral of the story for me is that just because a venue can hold 800+ people, it doesn't mean you should put folk or rock concerts on there.
