  • Come From Away: Where Reality Comes to the Stage

A tale of journey and discovery on an international scale, Come From Away is a musical that doesn n't look like much on paper, but certainly blows audiences away on stage. Indeed, it’s often through unexpected events that the most dramatic stories occur and that’s exactly what happens in this show. Based on a true story, Come From Away charts the experiences of those grounded due to the events of 9/11. With their flights forced to land in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, the travellers are taken in by the locals. What transpires is a meeting of contrasting cultures. However, as high-flying city types converse with humble townsfolk, the borders between them start to erode. In the shadow of a major historical event, the strangers seek unity in the darkest of times. Throughout the show, the music of Irene Sankoff and David Hein are enough to bring tears of joy and sorrow. However, ultimately, this musical is so much more than that. By recounting the stories of 7,000 stranded travellers, Come From Away is almost a historical document and, moreover, a reminder that kindness knows no bounds.

Why Audiences Travel from Far and Wide to Watch Come From Away

As the winner of four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, Come From Away has clearly done something right. While it would be easy to overlook what many would describe as a low– key show, Come From Away has a poignancy that makes it stand out. Devoid of the fancy lighting and all-out rocking tunes that other shows rely on, this production has an organic and relatable feel that makes it truly engaging. Stories of good and evil are common across theatreland but Come From Away has an authenticity that makes it unique. Using real interviews from those involved, this musical recreates one of the most memorable periods in modern history. This combined with some truly evocative and, at times, uplifting songs, has made Come From Away a dramatic masterpiece that n's taken audiences and critics by surprise.

Authenticity Wins Over Come From Away Critics

Adaptations of true stories are often accused of distorting the truth in order to over– dramatize events. Come From Away doesn't do that, which is why critics the world over have sung its praises:

It's seductive in its resolute unsexiness, and its gentle uncynical warmth spills off the stage, extending a hug to an audience that wouldn't dream of turning it away. – TimeOut

It would be impossible to imagine a more complete antidote to Neil LaBute's 2002 play The Mercy Seat than this warm musical. – Paul Taylor, The Independent

What people are saying about Come From Away

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as expected I'd really been looking forward to this event, especially as it had received such good reviews. I knew beforehand that it was a musical, but felt the actors words to music often made the words unclear. It was, nevertheless, still easy to follow the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such energy and fun! I bought tickets for this show because I had seen some positive reviews. What a surprise it was! It was brilliant, the singing and the humour. I loved it. I want to see it again. I took a friend with me and she said it was more than she expected. I had read about the story of the people from the grounded planes, and the hospitality and generosity of the Newfoundland communities so I knew some of the background. Seeing a musical about the positive actions of a community during the tragedy of 9/11 was so uplifting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A hidden gem This visit was made at the last minute, and we did not know what to expect. What a pleasant surprise! Everything about this musical was wonderful, even though it was simply displayed. Most of my acquaintances had never heard of it, but believe me they have been informed by me. A real feel-good experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling viewing I saw an opportunity to see this show at very reasonably priced tickets so took a chance and was so glad I did. I didn't know the story at all and had only read the advertising blurb that went with the show. I am so glad I went, a really uplifting story about people coming together in a time of crisis. Beautifully done, it was compelling and contained kindness, humour, some sadness and some things to make you think! Great music, didn't know any of the songs but they were easy listening and enjoyable. Really fantastic night out.
