"Saddle Up for a Knight to Remember" (Times)

After a lifetime of reading books on chivalry, one eccentric old man heads off on a rumbustious quest to become a wandering knight accompanied by his faithful and equally ill-suited servant, 'riotously performed by David Threlfall as Don Quixote and Rufus Hound as Sancho Panza' (The Times).

Taking up a lance and sword, Don Quixote sets out on a hilarious journey across medieval Spain, defending the helpless and vanquishing the wicked. Hopelessly unprepared and increasingly losing his grip on reality, with each calamitous adventure the two hapless heroes experience, the romantic ideal of Quixote?s books seems further away than ever.

Following its sell-out run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of Cervantes' death, the Royal Shakespeare Company's 'joyous' (Guardian) production of this legendary comic novel is told by a company of 20 actors accompanied by a band of live musicians.

Adapted for the stage by James Fenton and directed by Angus Jackson this 'magical' (Telegraph) production has opened to critical acclaim at the Garrick Theatre playing until 2 February.

What people are saying about Don Quixote

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic brought to life This was an RSC production and was brilliantly done. I loved the way the animals were designed with moving parts. It reminded me of "War Horse". The acting was first rate and Sancho Panza made the most of his pantomime style routines by inviting the audiencte to participate. The singing was good too. Al together it was an excellent evening's entertainment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Man's Pantomime Had such high hopes for this due to the amount of 4 star reviews by theatre critics. Couldn't believe Royal Shakespeare Company produced it. It was like an awful cheap pantomime with "audience participation" (throwing things into the audience, ridiculing boyfriends/girlfriends sitting in front row etc). The "comedy", such as it was, was very broad and I didn't laugh once as I found the juvenile antics quite tiresome. Oh, and they had a joke about Brexit being bad for the country. How original.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best shows I've seen this year What a wonderful evening! Everything about this production was absolutely marvelous. The cast, the setting, the music, the gimmicks... The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show and I was no exception. The second half was not quite as mesmerizing as the first one, but excellent nevertheless. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun filled escapade Took my 12 year old son to see this . Fortunate enough to be on the front row. We were crying with laughter at some points . Great characterisation by the whole cast. Wherever you looked , something was happening. Hound and Threfall were outstanding!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very enjoyable theatre production My daughter and I went to the show as a December treat. We have never read the book so were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this show. We found it very light hearted and excellently produced. The staging of it was brilliant especially the horses and donkey and the puppets. The lion was my favourite. Superb acting by two lead roles.Would recommend to anyone. We had bought Grand Circle restricted viewing tickets but on arrival got upgraded to seats in the stalls. Thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great fun! I have seen other performances which were quite serious - this was a lot of fun with some great audience participation moments as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
