The Book of Mormon: Stage Satire and Lampoonery at its Finest
If you thought irreverent humour and the West End don't mix, you were very wrong. The Mormons are here to convert you, bursting onto the stage in 2013 and redefining how music and comedy can interact. The Book of Mormon is one for the hardest to offend; written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, alongside musical maestro Robert Lopez, this show takes a sideswipe at the Mormon faith. Often sailing close to the wind but ultimately conveying the virtues of love and dedication. The story follows Elders Price and Cunningham as they journey to Uganda. In among the topics of AIDS and famine, the missionaries ultimately question religion. With the villagers indifferent to their teachings, the men are forced to look deep inside themselves, leading to one of the show's most iconic songs: I Believe. Does the mission cause them to leave the Church of Latter-Day Saints or have their eyes been opened to the true beauty of God. In true Parker and Stone style, we get the answer in the most brutally honest, satirically sharp way possible.
Why The Book of Mormon Will Make You Believe
Since it premiered on Broadway in 2011, The Book of Mormon has made waves in more ways than one. As well as having its soundtrack become the fastest-selling Broadway cast album on iTunes, the show has collected countless accolades. With 9 Tony Awards to honours from London's Evening Standard and an impressive 4 Oliviers, The Book of Mormon has won over many hard critics. Under any circumstances, this would be impressive. However, for a show that threatens to offend religious types with its comedic quips, it's even more of a feat. In fact, it's this willingness to shock that's made The Book of Mormon such a hit. While each joke and song has been carefully crafted so as not to directly attack any one person, the show isn't afraid to tackle the big issues head-on. As the cast sings about homosexuality, race and all manner of other touchy subjects, audiences are put firmly on the edges of their seats. However, with the score cleverly designed to be as catchy it is provocative, you can't help but be entertained by this cutting-edge production.

Critics Converted by The Book of Mormon
How do you lampoon an entire religion and not offend? Parker and Stone appear to have managed it with The Book of Mormon. In fact, even the critics are hot on this slick production: 'It's far, far cleverer, far kinder, far more nuanced than that, and one of its many surprises is that it sent an enraptured, ecstatic audience home with an odd sense of having come, somehow, to really like Mormons.' Euan Ferguson, The Guardian. 'The Book of Mormon merely flirts with blasphemy but there is something very winning about it.' Paul Taylor, The Independent.
