    Who is Ed Sheeran?

Ed Sheeran is an English singer/songwriter. As well as having multiple award winning singles and albums under his belt, Ed Sheeran has also made appearances in TV such as Game of Thrones and the film 'Bridget Jones's baby' . He is also known for his record label Gingerbread. During his music career Ed Sheeran has produced many genres of music ranging from pop, to folk, to hip-hop, but is most recognised playing his trusty acoustic guitar. He has collaborated with many well known artists including the likes of Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift. Ed Sheeran released his debut single in 2010 titled "The A-Team'. In 2011, Ed released an independent EP titled' No. 5 Collaborations project'. The EP is a collaboration between Ed and a selection of Grime artists including Devlin, Wiley, P Money, Ghetts, and JME. The EP sold over 7000 copies in it's first week and reached number 2 in the iTunes chart despite Ed not yet being signed to any label or promotion.

Flashing forward to 2021, he's achieved becoming one of the best selling music artists in the world with over 150 million record sales worldwide.

    What's his background?

Ed Sheeran was born in Framlingham, Suffolk. His musical career started at the early age of four where he sang in his church choir. It was at the age of 11 he picked up the guitar and started having lessons, setting in motion the monumental career that we all know him for today.

Speaking about his influences, Ed says that Van Morrison's 'Irish Heartbeat' was the album that introduced him to music, as well as his father taking him to see live shows for artists among the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and Eric Clapton. Clapton especially was pivotal in Ed's music career with Ed stating that he was the reason he started playing guitar. Additional inspirations for Ed Sheeran include The Beatles, Nizlopi, and Eminem.

In a 2017 Rolling Stone article, Ed attributed the start of his song writing career to Damien Rice, stating '"Seeing him play this small club in Ireland, I was able to meet him, and he was unbelievably cool. I went straight home and started writing songs. I would not be doing what I'm doing now if he'd been a jerk'

Ed released his EP "Loose Change" in 2010 which contained the classic acoustic jam "The A-Team", debuting at number 3 in the UK singles chart. Flashing forward 11 years and Ed has awards spanning from British Artist of the Year at the 2014 British Music Awards, to Favourite Male Artist 2015 at the American Music Awards, to Gaffa awards in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Ed has had multiple success stories at the Grammy Awards not just for his own tracks, but also for multiple collaborations projects he has worked on with other artists. In 2012, Taylor Swift's Red was nominated for album of the year, containing the track 'Everything Has Changed', which featured Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran in a duet. In 2011, Ed Sheeran topped the UK Albums Chart with his debut album "+' (plus) under Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. A year later, Sheeran won multiple awards for the album, including the Brit Awards for "British Breakthrough Act" and "Best British male Solo Artist'. "+" contained singles "The A-Team", "Lego House", and "You Need Me, I Don't Need You". Worldwide, "+" has made over 4 million sales.

His second studio album "x" (multiply) also won "Album of the Year' at the 2014 Brit Awards. "x" contained acoustic slow dance classic "Thinking out Loud', as well as singles "Sing", Don't', a remixed edition of "Bloodstream", and "Photograph'.

Sheeran released his third album "÷" (divide) in March of 2017 which debuted at number one across the globe including countries such as the UK, Germany, Australia, and Canada. The album also broke multiple records becoming the fastest selling album by a male solo artist in the UK and the third fastest in the entire history of the charts. The only artists ahead being Adele and Oasis.

The album's first 2 singles 'Castle on the Hill' and 'The Shape of You' debuted in the top two positions of the charts and went on to garner a combined total of over 13 million streams in 24 hours, breaking the Spotify day one streaming record. Other notable tracks from the album include "Galway Girl", "Perfect", and "Happier".

Sheeran's ÷ tour also became the highest grossing tour in history beating the likes of U2, Guns N' Roses, and The Rolling Stones

With plenty of hits to choose from, some personal favourites would be "Castle on the Hill', "Shape of You", and "The A-Team".
