Built in 1538 as part of a family home. It was used to entertain and impress noble guests. It sits in place of what was once part of the Lanercost monks living quarters.During the 1800’s, the area became famous for sightings of shape shifting ghosts that were said to be deterred by the use of a bible or a crucifix. In more recent years there have been sightings of ancient soldiers , feelings of being tapped on the shoulder and hearing strange noises such as knocking, clashing metal, groaning, screaming and crying.
