Hull Independent Cinema presents...
Dir Cord Jefferson | 2023 | USA | 117 min | 15 | English

Monk is a novelist, constantly frustrated that ‘Black’ entertainment pandering to offensive tropes is more successful than his own more nuanced work. To prove a point he adopts a pseudonym to write a fake book full of exaggerated stereotypes, satirising the tastes of the white literary establishment. He expects it to fail, but it becomes a massive hit, leading to a publishing and film deal, and Monk is forced to choose between success and his principles. A biting and important satire on the prejudices faced by people of colour in arts and the media.

Featuring Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae

Gotham Awards: Nominee, Outstanding Lead Performance
Toronto Int'nl Film Festival: Winner, Best Film
Virginia Film Festival: Winner, Narrative Feature & Breakthrough Director Award
Golden Globes: Nominee, Best Film - musical or comedy & Best Male Actor in a film, musical or comedy
BAFTAs: Winner, Best Adapted Screenplay

"A triumphant satire about race, exploitation, family and identity that’s as rich and captivating as [Wright's] tour-de-force." Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

"t’s an extremely funny movie that lands some sharp blows, and a stellar feature debut from seasoned TV writer Cord Jefferson." Alissa Wilkinson, Vox

"Jeffrey Wright gives great curmudgeon in writer/director Cord Jefferson’s feature debut." ★★★ Peter Howell, Toronto Star
