FOUR DAUGHTERS
Dir Kaouther Ben Hania | 2023 | France, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Tunisia | 107 min | 15 | Arabic

The story of Olfa Hamrouni and her four daughters, unpacking a complex family history through intimate interviews and performance to examine how the Tunisian woman's two eldest were radicalised by Islamic extremists. With professional actors as the missing daughters and their mother, the film restages pivotal moments in the family's life, interwoven with reflections from Olfa and her younger daughters, giving the women the chance to tell their own story and capturing moments of joy, loss, violence, and heartache. A compelling portrait of five women and a unique and ambitious work of nonfiction cinema.

Starring Olfa Hamrouni, Tayssir Chikhaoui, Eya Chikhaoui, Hind Sabri

REVIEWS
"Like a kind of cinematic Lego set, [Director] Ben Hania takes the building blocks of filmmaking and constructs from them something cathartic, affecting and original." ★★★★ Philip De Semlyen, Time Out

"Rarely does Ben Hania’s film feel exploitative or manipulative. In fact, more than anything, Four Daughters is radical in its honesty and courage." Lovia Gyarkye, Hollywood Reporter

"The real-life subjects, taking the lead in the restagings, deliver a revelatory, poignant blend of drama, memory, and self-scrutiny." Richard Brody, New Yorker

"Arab voices in Western cinemas are all too rare, and Four Daughters is one of the best films of the year." ★★★★ G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle

ACCESSIBILITY
This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. Please read on for more information.

Hull Independent Cinema is working towards creating more accessibility for our audiences. HIC have decided to present all our films with descriptive subtitles, where available.

Descriptive subtitles refer to subtitles intended for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They are also known as HOH (Hard of Hearing) subtitles or SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). These subtitles are a transcription rather than a just translation; in addition to reproducing dialogue, they aim to describe additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. “(sighs)” or “(door creaks)” and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.

RATING
Four Daughers is rated 15. Under 15s will not be admitted. For more information, please see the film's page on the BBFC website
