Dir Hirokazu Kore-eda | 2023 | Japan | 127 min | 12A | Japanese

When 11-year-old Minato starts to behave strangely, his mother suspects that he is being bullied by his teacher. She storms into the school demanding to know what is going on but runs up against an unsympathetic headteacher and the slow wheels of internal bureaucracy. Then Minato is accused himself of bullying one of his classmates, although they seem to be close friends. Just who is the monster here? As the story unfolds through the eyes of teacher, mother and child, the truth gradually emerges.

"It's one of the finest films of the year, and its structure — like its circle of characters — carries secrets that can only be unraveled through patience and empathy." Natalia Winkelman, New York Times

"Monster’s three perspectives are not so much in argument with one another as they are pieces of the same puzzle. And once they are locked together, the final portrait is staggeringly heartbreaking." Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

"A minutely observed, profoundly compassionate chronicle of untidy contemporary lives." ★★★★ Nicholas Barber, BBC

"Another striking piece of work from a master, a movie that’s so carefully calibrated that you get lost in these characters, forgetting they're performers and not people caught up in a genuinely traumatic chapter of life." Brian Tallerico,

This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. Please read on for more information.

Hull Independent Cinema is working towards creating more accessibility for our audiences. HIC have decided to present all our films with descriptive subtitles, where available.

Descriptive subtitles refer to subtitles intended for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They are also known as HOH (Hard of Hearing) subtitles or SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). These subtitles are a transcription rather than a just translation; in addition to reproducing dialogue, they aim to describe additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. “(sighs)” or “(door creaks)” and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.

Monster is rated 12A. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, please see the film's page on the BBFC website
