Hull Independent Cinema presents...
Dir Josh Margolin | 2024 | USA | 97 min | 12A | English

When 93-year-old Thelma gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she is determined to reclaim the money that has been stolen from her. But the police don’t take it seriously, her daughter’s just relieved no-one was hurt, and grandson Daniel has problems of his own. So Thelma recruits reluctant pal Ben to track down the scammers in a thrilling trek across LA in a warm-hearted comedy that combines hilarious pastiche of action-movie tropes with an insistence that age is just a number.

Starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree

Sarasota Film Festival: Winner, Jury Prize
Calgary Underground Film Festival: Winner, Best Narrative Feature
Desertscape International Film Festival: Winner, Best Action Movie

"Thelma is a totally pure delight that gives June Squibb a much-deserved leading role." Kristen Lopez, TheWrap

"...has a ton to say about senior autonomy, aging, ageism (two very different things), and the bonds between family members, young and old."
Gregory Ellwood, The Playlist

"Making his debut, writer-director Margolin combines acuity and playfulness in a funny action-drama whose spirit animal is Mission: Impossible."
Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily

Flashing Images
This film may contain sequences featuring flashing lights. Where possible, we will update the listing to confirm this closer to the screening date. For more information, please see the film's page on the BBFC website

This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. Please read on for more information.

Hull Independent Cinema is working towards creating more accessibility for our audiences. HIC have decided to present all our films with descriptive subtitles, where available.

Descriptive subtitles refer to subtitles intended for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They are also known as HOH (Hard of Hearing) subtitles or SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). These subtitles are a transcription rather than a just translation; in addition to reproducing dialogue, they aim to describe additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. “(sighs)” or “(door creaks)” and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.

THELMA is rated 12A. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, please see the film's page on the BBFC website
