BYE BYE TIBERIAS
Dir Lina Soualem | 2023 | France, Palestine, Belgium, Qatar | 82 min | Cert PG | French and Palestinian Arabic language with English subtitles

In her early twenties, Hiam Abbass left her native Palestinian village to follow her dream of becoming an actress in Europe, leaving behind her mother, grandmother, and seven sisters. Thirty years later, her filmmaker daughter Lina returns with her to the village and questions for the first time her mother’s bold choices, her chosen exile and the way the women in their family influenced both their lives.

Set between past and present, Bye Bye Tiberias pieces together images of today, family footage from the nineties and historical archives to portray four generations of daring Palestinian women who keep their story and legacy alive through the strength of their bonds, despite exile, dispossession, and heartbreak.

Starring Eiman Yousif, Siran Riak, Nazar Goma, Ger Duany

REVIEWS
"This is a rich family saga about hope and lost and found; about undying family bonds unchanged by distance and personal ideologies; about the cruelty of borders and the tattered state of the Arab world, and about the resilience of the Palestinian soul." Joseph Fahim, Middle East Eye

"A powerful celebration of lives marked by separation, exile and erasure. beautiful portrait of four generations of women, the inherited trauma they carry and the bonds of love, shared history and memories that will always connect us to the family members who came before." Hanna Flint, The New Arab

"The distractions that pull Abbass’s stare away from her daughter’s lens give Bye Bye Tiberias a pointedly political backbone that the documentary buoys with clever editing and a tangible self-assuredness." Roxana Hadadi, New York Magazine

"A powerful celebration of lives marked by separation, exile and erasure." Allan Hunter, Screen International

ACCESSIBILITY
This film will be presented with Descriptive Subtitles. Please read on for more information.

Hull Independent Cinema is working towards creating more accessibility for our audiences. HIC have decided to present all our films with descriptive subtitles, where available.

Descriptive subtitles refer to subtitles intended for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. They are also known as HOH (Hard of Hearing) subtitles or SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). These subtitles are a transcription rather than just a translation; in addition to reproducing dialogue, they aim to describe additional non-dialogue sounds available to a hearing audience, e.g. “(sighs)” or “(door creaks)” and song lyrics. In our experience, guests do not find the subtitles distracting, especially as the majority of our films are subtitled foreign language films.

AGE RATING
BYE BYE TIBERIAS has rated PG by the BBFC. See the BBFC website for more details (may include spoilers).
