SPACES UNFOLDING

Philipp Wachsmann (Violin)
Neil Metcalfe (Flute)
Emil Karlsen (Percussion)

Spaces Unfolding was initiated by Norwegian drummer Emil Karlsen and features UK stalwart improvisers Neil Metcalfe and Philipp Wachsmann. The trio was created to explore the percussion, violin and flute constellation with a particular interested in the acoustic spaces which they inhabit.

?Having been introduced to the London Improvisers Orchestra a few years earlier, Karlsen first approached long time member Metcalfe about potentially forming a trio. It was then known that he and Wachsmann had only collaborated in various large ensembles, never before in a small group context.

Two obvious collaborators whose paths rarely crossed ultimately outlined an intriguing framework for the group to emerge from and this laid the foundation for their first outing: ‘The Way We Speak’. The album was captured in the unique acoustics of St.Mary’s Old Church, the last surviving Elizabethan Church in London, and was released November 2022 on the historic Bead Records to critical acclaim.

ALEX WARD AND DOMINIC LASH

Alex Ward (Clarinet and Guitar)
Dominic Lash (Double Bass and Guitar)

Alex Ward was last spotted in Tyne and Wear opening for Spiritualized at Sage Gateshead. His diverse musical activities since the early ’90s have straddled the worlds of free improvisation, contemporary composition and avant rock, and have seen him collaborate with such iconic musical figures as Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne and Thurston Moore, amongst a host of others.

Dominic Lash is a freely improvising double bassist and electric guitarist who the Free Jazz Collective has called an "exceptional creative musician". He also both writes and performs composed music and, as an academic, researches and writes about film.
He plays or has played with musicians such as John Butcher, Joe Morris, Evan Parker, Pat Thomas, and Nate Wooley, and performed with the late Tony Conrad, Steve Reid, and John Russell.

The duo visit Newcastle in support of their recent album ‘Antonyms’ available now through Bandcamp: www.alexward.bandcamp.com/album/antonyms

This is an incredible double bill of contemporary, free and experimental jazz and it’s an absolute delight for Jazz North East to present this concert in the intimate upstairs setting of The Globe Newcastle.
