What people are saying about The Prince of Egypt

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best musicals Absolutely incredible show. Some of the best production I have ever seen, and the talent of the performers was outstanding. A marvellous story told so beautifully. Fantastic

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Missed the mark My wife is a huge fan of the animated Dreamworks film, and when this musical was announced she was buzzing to see it. This was a much anticipated birthday treat, which we traveled from Edinburgh to London for, but we left feeling utterly let down by this production. Firstly, I'd like to commend all of the performers who were clearly very talented. And particularly the band, who sounded incredible and perfectly captured the sound of the score from the film. However, the story was so incoherent, inconsistent and poorly executed. Every character was completely misrepresented and unrecognisable. The story was changed to such an extent that the big finale 'there can be miracles' didn't make any sense in the context of this new story that they had created. This was not a retelling of the Exodus account of the Bible and Torah, this was a complete rewriting of it. There was potential for this musical to be an absolute epic. The Dreamworks animation is incredibly moving and powerful, with brilliant and memorable songs. Sadly, this fell so short and completely misjudged the heart of the story. It became a confused family melodrama (like a weird Ancient Egyptian soap opera), when it should have been a story of God freeing an entire race of people who had been enslaved for generations. It merely skimmed through iconic moments such as the burning bush, the plagues, and the parting of the red sea and instead spent the majority of the musical trudging through a claggy nonsensical family dynamic that was never there. The several new songs spent on this were weak and forgettable, so there was a marked jump in quality when there was a snippet of the original Dreamworks numbers. Ultimately, all of the excellent work done by the cast, set designers, and musicians, was undermined by the weak, inauthentic rewriting of the story and the average new songs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Price of Egypt I went to see the preview show and was not disappointed, the staging, dancing and singing is amazing. They have taken a bible story and really got into the life of the characters in such a clever way

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little different than expected. I purchased tickets as soon as they were released and was looking forward to the production as Disney' Prince of Egypt is one of the family favourites. We were a little bit disappointed. There were too many songs, some of which didn't need to be in the show. As with extra scenes. If your doing Disney, at least stick to the storyline. This was about Hotep and his control and a little too much about Nefertiti too, both of which weren't in the Disney version. The scenery was fabulous as was the people props and the singing. Although a little too much. The focus strayed awaybfrom the storyline for us.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best Was very different to the film version. The quality of the new songs is no where near the originals. The costumes also seemed like they have a low production value. The cast did a great job performing but the story and material was lacking.
