What people are saying about A Very Expensive Poison

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not really ripe for humour I read the book before seeing the play and was expecting a serious, clear analysis of the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and the aftermath. What I got was a slightly incoherent - although well-acted drama - which didn't even feature the title, leaving it unexplained. It was played for laughs at times which sits ill with the actual event and the more recent attempt to kill the Skripals in similar fashion. Lucy Prebble is highly regarded having made her name with Enron. Although it was very successful in London it came off after one week in New York, and I don't see this piece travelling well either. The events did not unfold clearly in the play and the only reason I'm giving it three stars and not two is I also attended the pre-play talk with Litvinenko's widow and the author of the book on which Prebble based her play. Marina Litvinenko is a dignified, admirable and brave woman, and that helped me at times watching her tragic past being portrayed on stage.
