Alex Rex and Green Seagull at "The Waiting Room", Stoke Newington
The first band to play were the melodic psyche rock band Green Seagull. This young group are clearly influenced by American West Coast bands of the late Sixties (such as Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Strawberry Alarm Clock etc.) but they give their music a fresh and contemporary feel. They include a vibrant female keyboard player and a singer who bears some resemblance to a young Syd Barrett in his general appearance, paisley shirt etc..
The final act of the evening was Alex Rex, the mastermind behind my favourite band of the past decade, The Trembling Bells. Alex's new line-up features himself on drums and lead vocals, Rory Hayes and Adrienne Bijoux on guitars, plus Georgia Seddon (daughter of Mike Heron) on keyboard. His influences include artists such as Bob Dylan, John Cale and Nick Cave plus traditional folk artists, and his music embraces both noise and melody, Alex describes his new works as "songs of loss, love and loathing", and they generally explore the darker aspects of relationships and his own psyche, but with enough irony and dry humour to make the whole package a thoroughly rivetting and enjoyable experience.
