Marking twenty-five years of 'ravishing the senses', Cryptic presents Below the Blanket, a series of new artworks installed throughout the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and inspired by one of Scotland's most extraordinary and unsung natural features.

The Flow Country is the world's largest blanket bog, a vast mass of peat and Sphagnum moss, shot through with hundreds of lochs, that covers 200,000 hectares in Caithness and Sutherland. Home to many rare animals, birds, insects and plants, the peat also acts as a natural store for carbon, helping to offset the effects of climate change.

Artists Kathy Hinde, Lucy Holland, Hannah Imlach, Heather Lander, Matthew Olden and composer Malcolm Lindsay have made work responding to this stimulating setting, drawing inspiration from the Flow Country's wildlife and soundscape, the gradual process of peat formation, and even the way the blanket bog 'breathes' as it expands and contracts. Visitors to the gardens will encounter artworks that are evocative, emotive and beautiful, and will come away enlightened about this unique Scottish landscape.

Below the Blanket is presented as part of The Peatland Partnership's Flows to the Future Project (with RSPB Scotland as lead partner).

What people are saying about Below The Blanket

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An evocative experience in a lovely garden setting. I went to this event on my own as the description sounded interesting. I was glad to have the personal space in order to immerse myself more fully in what turned out to be a very evocative experience enjoying the garden itself whilst learning about the significance of the immense peat bog that exists on our small island in the north of Scotland. The various sound effects were beautiful and highlighted the interaction between people and place - and the fact that humankind is not the best custodian of the natural wonders of nature. The information boards provided a useful context explaining the current endeavors to counteract the negative environmental effects of commercial logging and the significance of the music in the various parts of the display.
