Keeping Luther’s Blues alive in Worthing
Absolutely blinding evening with Bernard Allison, Mike Zito, and new blues talent Vanja Sky who impressed me no end - loved it. Much of the show served as a tribute to the music of Bernard’s dad (and one of my blues heroes): the late, great Luther Allison.
As soon as the three of them came on together and opened with a blistering version of “Low Down and Dirty”, a particular favourite Luther track of mine, I knew I was in for a good night. We then got treated to their three separate short solo sets before the finale performing more of Luther’s gold together – all backed up by one of the greatest-sounding rhythm sections around, that bassist and drummer were absolutely in the pocket.
All this for under £25.00 a ticket was money rather well spent I reckon, massive thanks as ever to Phil Duckett for his very hard work continuing to bring all these quality artists over to this amazing Sussex venue.
Was lovely meeting them all afterwards, and can’t wait to settle down with a suitable beverage and get my nice little haul of signed albums going on the stereo. As I said to Bernard afterwards, his dad would certainly have been hugely pleased and proud looking down on such a superb night of his rockin' blues sound being kept very much alive.
