What people are saying about Better Oblivion Community Center

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better OblivioN Community Center - Bristol I've never written a review of a gig, and I guess I didn't know that anyone did, because who's got the time or the inclination? But anyway, I felt compelled to after reading Neil's below. Phoebe and Connor, along with the band put on a great show certainly providing 'value for money' as Neil put it, playing a pleasantly long set list and throwing in a few surprises. Contrary to Neil, I really enjoyed the up tempo nature applied to the songs, particularly the more mellow numbers. Phoebe and Connor played off each other, and complemented each other perfectly. Great night, and great support from Christian Lee Hutson!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyable but some disappointments A strange gig: there was much to enjoy, but I left a little disappointed. Conor and Phoebe are fine on their album, where the music is quite restrained with mostly acoustic guitar accompaniment, but their very different styles and personalities were very evident live and the three - and occasionally four - electric guitars plus loud percussion made for a very different experience. This was highlighted by the perverse and ruinous rendering of Funeral, one of Phoebe's most moving and beautiful songs with a haunting melody and poignant lyrics, now sung by Conor as a frantic, cacophonous rant: an incongruous mismatch of form and content. The gig, with 18 songs and lasting 90 minutes, was certainly value for money, but there was disappointingly little interaction with the audience though a bit humour with two false starts and some confusion about Mother’s Day! Phoebe was a delight throughout with a composed presence and wonderful voice.
