More Information about Christmas At The Botanics

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas when the trees and Glasshouses of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are spectacularly lit and all aglow. There's something for everyone at this festive event, a one mile illuminated trail that winds its way through the world-famous Garden providing a magical experience after dark.

This year, the new 2017 winter trail is a botanical wonderland inspired by the Garden itself. As you enter, greeted by the sights and sounds of Christmas, wander beneath the tree canopies bathed in seasonal colour.

Follow the path through the enchanting Crystal Lawn and stop for a moment to change the colour of the trees yourself. As you head down the hill, The Heart of Stars, a giant heart-shaped mirror ball scatters tiny diamonds of light high into the night sky.

As the path narrows, enjoy the sight and sounds of the Choir of the Trees, a woodland grove of 'singing' conifers and then continue towards glittering trees festooned with giant baubles. Prepare to be mesmerised by the hypnotic beauty of a flickering, scented Fire Garden. Then, stroll along a fairy tale avenue of giant glowing butterflies and pause at the magnificent Beech Hedge illuminated by flashes of sparkling light. Don't forget to watch out for Santa and his elves along the way.

Complete your Christmas treat under the stars with spiced cider, mulled wine or hot chocolate whilst the aroma of roasting chestnuts fills the air. Gather to toast marshmallows at one of the fire pits and enjoy other traditional fare before browsing the Garden's festive gift shop.

What people are saying about Christmas At The Botanics

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not very exciting I invited my extended family (8 adults), and we all thought it was a bit dull. Thanks to the weather, it was a nice walk. Certainly more suitable for small children (up to 5 y.o), which could have been made clearer in the event description. We want to commend the friendly staff and the effort.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful but overpriced Three of us went to this after Christmas . It was beautiful and lovely to see the children’s reaction .It was I feel a bit pricy .The little wooden huts set up around the trail are a lovely idea but charging all the way round for ‘added’extras detracted from the whole experience, particularly for families with young children (naturally children want it all ). It would have been more in keeping with the spirit of Christmas to include maybe a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate and maybe a toasted marshmallow on the way round Keeping the selling of food and drink to inside the building. It is a lovely idea though and we did enjoy it.Not sure I ll be doing it again .y

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Attractive, but missing the wow factor I visited this with my teenage daughter and my elderly parents. We liked it alot, and there some lovely parts such as the varied musical and colour display on the lawn above the chinese garden, but nothing to thrill commensurate with the ticket prices. One upside was they didn't have a problem with me reselling the tickets after two of our party were down with the cold.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Botanics Xmas lights - Ok Pretty but not v exciting and quite expensive for what it was. Lacked opportunities for engagement - too passive. Where was ‘the story that tied the various light ‘events’ together? Dismayed to discover snack stalls also quite pricey. Too commercial - Sorry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magical So glad we got to see it, as our booked evening was cancelled because of 50mph gusting winds. We got great notice of cancellation (lunchtime on the day) and re-using the tickets was simple. A wee treat for my husband’s 5-year old goddaughter and we all loved it. She particularly love the bubbles and dancing to The Nutcracker - she’d been to the ballet two days before. The lit-up trees were simply stunning, with something different round each corner. Superb stewarding too, poor guys must have been frozen! Only gripe was the cost of the food, a bit steep. Fantastic experience overall, definitely go again.
