Erika M Anderson, with Susan Lucia on drums and Leif Shackleford on strings and buttons, created a basement chemistry that Stateside, might have landed them in the Federal slammer, but in Glasgow, endeared them to an intimate but vocal crowd, at Broadcast on Sauchiehall Street. Swaying her head like a giraffe in a neck-fight, Anderson’s vocals swung from fragile to punchy, one hand always tight round her microphone or the neck of her Fender Jaguar. Songs like ‘Breathalyser’ 'Butterfly Knife', and ‘Grey Ship’, were evocative of passion and panic on the prairies of her home state of South Dakota. And yet, for all her exhilarating bleakness, Anderson was an affable, witty stage presence, clearly pleased to meet an audience familiar with and ready for her music. From 2011’s Past Life Martyred Saints, to this year's The Outer Ring, she crammed a six-year back-catalogue into a sixty-five minute set, with efficiency of a performer used to packing for the road. A brief, but mutual, pleasure.
