Rated 4 out of
Rather Interminable Boogie
Simon and I left with ears ringing and arguing whether it was just the two (!) or three (!!) numbers they'd played before quitting the stage. By then you just knew they wouldn't be doing more than one encore. I was right as ever - they cunningly merged the title track from underwhelming new album 'Vibe Killer' with track 5, 'Back in 74' before finishing with the more dynamic 'Smoking Figs in the Backyard'. This was simultaneously their strength - building numbers into a delirious twin guitar frenzy (imagine Tom Verlaine with a rocket up his crypt - and weakness. By the encore I'd had an earful of extended fretboard workouts and longed for something short and snappier, the turbo-charged 'Tarmac City', for example.
So, never was a combo more aptly named. 'Boogie' definitely but alas, rather 'Endless'.
