Gorgeous all roundDetails for this gig were only released 2 days beforehand, but the (admittedly small) venue was a sell out by show time. Elena Tonra's trademark sound, developed with Daughter for many years now, is clear and present throughout, but these songs have a much more personal feel to them. In keeping with Daughter, and other acts of this genre, her multi-talented band swapped instruments throughout, whilst she even ditched her guitar or bass a couple of times, focusing on the emotions behind the lyrics. She is a captivating performer, with the ability to reduce a semi-drunk rabble of a crowd to complete silence. She is cute, honest, humble and expresses all of these with a nervous humour that puts the entire room at ease. The only things heard from the audience all night are laughter and the occasional 'We love you!' hollered in the gaps between songs. Despite this all being brand new and completely unheard, it felt like you were listening to an album that you knew, but maybe hadn't listened to in a while. Every lyric is clear and precise and the crowd were able to listen to her stories and ride along on her cathartic journey, feeling every emotion, crying every tear. I hope this project continues to resurface during lulls in her regular schedule; it is most, most welcome.
