Great gig for a Ginger virgin
After seeing the Wildhearts at Newcastle as part of the Britrock tour, great gig, popping out to Carlisle to see Ginger was a no brainer, despite knowing nothing of his solo work.
First up was a mate of ours, Neil Harper frontman of Colt 45 and playing as a solo artist for the first time, Neil was in fine voice playing some Colt 45 tracks, some of his own material and finishing off with a powerful version of Diane from Husker Du/Therapy? this set us up nicely fro Ginger.
This isn't really a solo gig as Ginger has a mate along, Jase, on guitar, this is guitar work of the highest order and it gave the whole set a massive sound. Ginger was in great voice, having a chat between songs, telling us where the song came from and some of the scrapes he had gotten into during his long and very interesting career. Towards the end he threw in a few Wildhearts favourites, but on the whole I though his solo stuff was superb, emotionally charged with a slice of life in every song, a mix between Ralph McTell, SLF and Lemmy. A memorable performance and a singer that I would go and see again tomorrow.
