Harry Potter: A History of Magic

20 October 2017 - 28 February 2018
British Library PACCAR Gallery

Journey to where magic and myth began

Have you ever wanted to delve into Divination, ponder the peculiarities of Potions and discover enchanting creatures? Now you can.

We unveil rare books, manuscripts and magical objects from the British Library's collection, capturing the traditions of folklore and magic which are at the heart of the Harry Potter stories. Marvel at original drafts and drawings by J.K. Rowling and illustrator Jim Kay, both on display for the first time.

See the gargantuan 16th-century Ripley Scroll that explains how to create a Philosopher's Stone. Gaze at Sirius in the night sky as imagined by medieval astronomers. Encounter hand-coloured pictures of dragons, unicorns and a phoenix rising from the flames.

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with this extraordinary new addition to J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A brilliant afternoon I went to see this exhibition with my husband and Harry Potter mad daughter. We were not disappointed, it is amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded my expectations! I took my niece to this event as part of her Christmas present. She is a massive Harry Potter fan and she absolutely loved it and I did too even though ive only ever seen each film once. The interactive parts were really interesting alongside the celing decorations of tea cups and boomsticks which made you want to keep looking and taking it in. The invisible coat was my favourite part, very witty indeed. Thanks for a great time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Varied and interesting The process was very well organised in allowing only a section of people through at any one time but we did all seem to clog up at certain points - mainly anything hand-written or hand-drawn by J K Rowling. There were fun things for the younger visitors and a little interactive. Well worked out and good use of space but it was quite exhausting as we shuffled from room to room without a break. Realistically, I can't see that they could have done anything to help. I was impressed by the amount of HP in the exhibition as I was expecting it to be more about the history of magic. Very enjoyable. No photography was allowed so no photos in this review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Informative but too busy Great exhibition but far to small for the number of visitors per time slot and it does not account for slow readers who held up the queue even more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Should have read the title more carefully Lots of history of magic but for me not enough Harry Potter. I was probably spoilt by having been to Harry Potter World in Universal Orlando. Did enjoy the "spell making" though and beautifully presented.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkable exhibition As I’m an artist it’s very crucial seeing as many exhibitions as I can and I feel really lucky that I went to such a spectacular show!!! I’ve grown with Harry Potter films and it’s so touching watching all the story again from the very first beginning!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent, a treat for any Harry Potter fab Completely satisfied. We had some time to fill before another event and this was the perfect way to do it. The notes form JK Rowling were incredible to see. The exhibit was stunning. To look at, and the decision to divide it by hogwarts class was excellent. Would visit again

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you are interested in Harry Potter then you will be interested in this exhibition I went to this exhibition with my 18 year old Grand-daughter and we both thoroughly enjoyed it all. It was beautifully displayed and the inter-active parts were superb, also the ceiling decorations and effects. As it is sold out, I do hope it is going on tour so that others can go to see it. My first visit to the British Library but I will certainly be going again.
