Still some heroes
Two sets from the unsmiling man in black, the first a selection of solo material drawing heavily from new album Monster; the second a storming run through of Stranglers classics. Much talk in the crowd afterwards as to the relative merits of hearing the original vocalist compared with going to see the rest of his former band performing the same clutch of favourites. You know what, why not do both and hear these great songs twice: Strange Little Girl, Goodbye Toulouse, No Mercy, Thrown Away (a somewhat forgotten fave of mine), a truly sensational Nice n’ Sleazy and of course finishing with No More Heroes. Then he sprang across to the merch bar and started signing autographs, although in true Hugh fashion he had growled earlier from the stage, “no purchase, no signature!”
There are still a few heroes left, despite what he tells us - and this bloke is one of mine.
