What people are saying about Hugh Cornwell

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Event Louth Town Hall has attracted some big names over the last year or so, but for me none (so far) have made quite such an impact on my youth as Hugh Cornwell - he was a Strangler, THE Strangler - no one, other than Nick Cave and Magazine, left quite such a legacy with me. Yes Mr Cornwell, it's partially your fault that I've inflicted my guitar playing on an unsuspecting world. Thankfully, Hugh Cornwell is a good deal more adept with a song than I am, and this gig did not disappoint. The sound and lighting were perfect for an acoustic show. The first set was an impressive selection of Hugh's post-Stranglers catalogue - with a fee brand new songs also thrown in. But, for those of us enthralled by The Stranglers in our teenage years, it was the second set that really shone.... from Nice And Sleazy to Strange Little Girl and Golden Brown not a single song disappointed.... and we got to meet Hugh afterwards. Great venue, for such a small market town, great organisation and ...... Hugh Cornwell? They say you should never meet your heroes - I've met all 3 of mine now... nice guys one all. Next time you see a Hugh Cornwell gig advertised, get a ticket..... you wont be disappointed

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rude & Intimidating Carlisle - 28th October - I was shocked. Hugh appeared to be in a grim mood. He stopped the show 3 times to chastise people who had the misfortune to take a photo (admittedly with flash) and for talking too loudly. Not a polite, please refrain, but a full on bollocking and rude ear-stinging rebuke. I felt like a naughty schoolboy sitting on my hands and hardly daring to breathe. I was glad to leave. I won't see him again which is a shame. He won't care, but I do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Possibly the poorest gig I've been to in some years I expect Hugh to be irrascible. I've seen him be rude to his stage crew and the audience before. What I wasn't expecting was what seemed like poor musicianship and stage craft. I have seen 14 year old boys look more comfortable singing and playing Hugh's songs. We cherish our Stranglers, and even some memories of Hugh. This gig challenged the veracity of those memories. A great shame. Maybe it's time he stopped.
