Gig of the year so far - and will take a lot to beat it!
This was in an old railway arch, a new venue on me. Ian leapt from the wings clutching his guitar, quite unassumingly, so I thought for a second he was a roadie doing final tweaks. He played a really long set with not much talking in between except for when there was a rumble overhead ("that's a train, right?") and when it got stiflingly hot ("what I want to know is - who opened the gates of h*ll?") The capacity audience was spellbound, he really held the crowd. His songs are dark and the lyrics contrast well with his amazing clear, crisp guitar playing. I'd talked to someone before the set who said his last London gig a few months ago was his gig of last year, so this had a lot to live up to. And it really did. Can't wait for Ian to come back to these shores. (Asterisk is because review was rejected due to profanity!)
