Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lenmania sets the Norwich Waterfront alight Starting back in 2004 this reviewer was lucky enough to see the then-fledgling 3 piece Reuben many times over 4 years, turning from musically-savvy energetic rock upstarts into the spectacular rock beasts they became before calling it a day. From that moment I had always expected what most others did - either a new band or a reformation. It turns out neither of those were the best possible outcome... because Jamie is excelling on his own. What Jamie has done over the last few years is to re-centre himself and find his own voice amidst a changing musical landscape and the occasionally unmoveable expectations of his own followers. And dang it, I missed his Muscle Museum tour. So after all of this I wondered what to expect from the new and revised Jamie Lenman...... Didn't matter. Shouldn't have worried. He was incredible. Though he was as tight and focused as he always was I have never seen Jamie have so much fun as I did at this show; whether he has worked through demons or found a new perspective, he shined from minute one: his charisma and quick wit were relentless and often gave the audience something to laugh about (his disappointment in Tombland was a highlight). All white outfit, precision follicles and sticker-laden guitar, he has really amped up his anachronisms in both appearance and in his music - smart and yet punk, loud and yet heartfelt, funny and yet tragic. And this leads us to the actual music... Jamie has never been one to shy away from experimentation and his Devolver Tour live show is no exception: with the help of drummer/vocalist Dan Kavanagh he plays the show as a two-piece, either playing with a backing track or affecting the guitar to allow it to play bass notes as well as normal guitar. For the first few minutes it is jarring to see two men create the sound of a whole band, but it is done so well and so organically that by song two, no-one cares. A well-balanced setlist (with more Reuben than expected) allowed for the energy to stay high and the crowd to really get going. To list the songs or pick apart their relative attributes would be pointless - If you've heard his music you're already a fan - just know that he and Dan played almost flawlessly to a crowd who knew every word and a venue who knew exactly how to mix it. What was unexpected were two things: Jamie occasionally playing drums (which he does predictably well) and a perfectly-judged acoustic set at the end. At times the crowd's singing drowned out Jamie himself and he actively encouraged it - he was infectiously joyous throughout and by the end, no-one wanted to go home. Jamie has the songwriting skills to adapt to any format or genre - which he himself proves with almost every new release - but what will never change is that he is always at his best when connecting with his fans on a live stage... Norwich hasn't seen him for a while and both his performance and the crowd's reactions proved that he'd better be back real soon. ---- *Shout out to supports Loa Loa and Gender Roles... both of them angular, youthful re-interpretations of the grunge aesthetic - they played brilliantly and were the perfect starters for the main event.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Continues to be one of the strongest live performances I've ever seen. From start to finish, Jamie Lenman had the audience captivated, constantly engaging in conversation with the audience & involving us throughout the entire show. Impeccable performance, with a few surprise numbers back from the back catalogue.
