What people are saying about Joan As Police Woman

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous acoustic performance I went to this event with my daughter and we had fabulous seats in the 2nd row I. This perfect small venue at NRCM in Manchester. Would thoroughly recommend this venue for other artists. The set was simple but beautifully lit and the performance was intimate and as an audience member you felt special.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Joan As Policewoman, The Gate, Cardiff The Gate in Cardiff is underused as a gig venue ; fewer than ten times a year it hosts touring artists, but the quality more than compensates for this frugality. This gig was a perfect example of this, with Joan Wasser delighting and transfixing her acolytes from beginning to end. Acompanying herself on either piano or guitar, she played a selection of career highlights in support of her recent release, the wittily titled Joanthology (no Greatest Hits mundanity here) and left all present charmed with the songs and the playful manner of their delivery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back to Basics Show! An intimate back to basics show - just Joan with piano & guitar. Impeccable choice of songs from across her studio albums with a couple of surprises thrown in.(Prince's 'Kiss') Some of the set list included Tell Me, Real life, Human Condition, We Don't Own It, Flash, Christobel, The Magic, What a World, with an encore of The Ride and Your Song.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great intamate venue playing host to Joan as only Joan can be. Joan kicked up a storm in Cornwall at a great venue. Her 1st visit in almost 15 years left the crowd hungry for more. Great songs and witty banter the hour a three quarters flew by.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super talented and close to our public Joan was absolutely amazing and took time to meet her public after the show. She was everything you would expect her to be. So talented and lovely! The venue (Earth Dalston) was okay, although as Joan mentioned herself we had to bear with the constant noise of the cans being opened. The bar staff should open them at the bar, so people don't open them back in the audience. That didn't spoil it for me though :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hugely under-rated singer songwriter - Great evening at a small venue At almost exactly 9, Joan and her 3 band members came onto the tiny stage. They started with Wonderful (which is, in my opinion) and then worked through a mixture of tracks from 'Damned Devotion' (the latest, and excellent, album), including "Tell Me", "Warning Bell" and "What Was It Like" and back catalogue material such as "Eternal Flame", "Human Condition" and "The Silence". Throughout the performance, Joan chatted with the crowd and her bandmates and some time of the full set was undoubtedly lost, so there was barely a moment before they returned for the inevitable encore. This included the excellent "The Magic" and ended on a slow paced version of Prince's "Kiss" (The most covered song of the last 30 years?). Sadly, my last train was 11:15, so I had to leave part way through this (promised to be the last song), but the performance had been excellent. I was glad to have seen Joan perform with a band. I'd been mightily impressed with her at Rough Trade, but ultimately I guess I just prefer the sound of a full band and the songs were more familiar in this form, too. The venue was, I suspect, perfect for them. Joan commented that this sort of venue was their favourite and the set was moodily lit throughout, with plenty of smoke giving the atmosphere, but thankfully not the noxious fumes, of a smokey jazz club from the '70s, helped by Joan's gold lame jumpsuit and glittery eye shadow. It was though, stiflingly warm - I dread to think what it would have been like a couple of weeks earlier in 30C+ heat!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Joan Genius! Second JAPW gig I attended this year following the release of her superlative Damned Devotion album (my favourite of the year to date). This gig, as Joan herself made reference to, was a very different atmosphere to the Festival Hall performance in April, but the less formal intimacy of O'meara suited the band's laid-back soul-pop style perfectly. Joan acknowledged how important her 'family' of musicians are to her and the sound they create is testament to their cohesion as a unit and often breath-taking! When Joan veered from the minimal electronic precision of several of DD's excellent tracks (e.g. Wonderful, Tell Me, Warning Bell) to slightly more prog-ish 'wig-outs' of tracks like Steed, it felt like the band were about to lose control and take off! Ironically, although I prefer the aforementioned songs on the new album best in their recorded form, I would welcome this more unshackled, Joan-let-loose approach for a full performance next time as these songs gave a whole other dimension to the band and Joan's songwriting skill. Joan Wasser - you are on another plane - and you take us there whenever you hit the stage!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Performance! Joan Wasser is one of the best singer songwriters around and at this gig she delivered all of her soulful torch songs from her new l.p Damned Devotion with style and class. Backed by an amazing band she made for an atmospheric evening with witty audience banter in between the songs. Go see her!
