Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant night out at small venue which made it feel special Having been a massive Dire Straits fan since the start was keen to hear Johns story and hear his latest music. He did not disappoint and along with playing Dire Straits favourites it was a brilliant night!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The top event I had a few misgivings about John Illsley being interviewed but his manager was brilliant and was far more like an informal chat. The music and John's band were just of the highest calibre and I had forgotten how many brilliant tracks Dire Straits had made and how John's own music was a natural extension.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Live Music with True Entertainment In a packed theatre (albeit just 220), Illsley chatted affably with his manager of 40 years, Paul Cummings, as images of Dire Straits from 1977-1992 were depicted on the back projection. It was informative, light hearted, seemingly spontaneous (though I saw a similar event in March, just as good) and truly entertaining as Illsley is self-effacing, gently amusing, impressively unsmug for a rock star and raconteurish. After half an hour, he was joined by Robbie McIntosh, Steve Smith and Hannah Robinson for 40 mins of DS songs, a break of 25 minutes as Illsley signed CDs and chatted to punters. Then another half hour of chat with Paul and a further 40 mins of exemplary music. Only two of Illsley’s solo songs featured in a 12-14 song set. Some might have liked more music and less chat but I really enjoyed the balance. Three guitars/basses and keyboards, no drums or ‘big production’ but McIntosh deserves a special mention for being a virtuoso guitarist in his own right as well as channelling brilliantly the Knopfler sound on tracks like Sultans of Swing and Private Investigations. I am a committed fan of DS but I also love Illsley’s solo work so, for me, it was pretty much a perfect evening out that could (for my money) have lasted another 2 hours without being a minute too long. Keep ‘em wanting more? They certainly did. Great stuff.
