Something for Everyone
This was the longest set I've seen of Joshua Burnside's, and probably his finest yet. His craft - and that of the band - improves with each new gig. From the swaying opening instrumental in 5/4 time, it's clear Burnside is a thoughtful artist at home in both hammering guitar and intimate acoustic; and there was time for both tonight. Their trumpeteer being away on holiday was a notable absence, but the remaining five band players (cellist especially) worked hard to fill in the gaps.
It was the most upmarket venue I've seen Burnside play so far, with the mood less raucous then some of his former basement sets. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues.
