More Information about Kiss Me, Kate

"So hot it's practically a fire risk" ★★★★★ The Guardian "Sizzling" ★★★★★ The Arts Desk Kiss Me, Kate I Hate Men Opera North's award-winning production of Cole Porter's Broadway comedy classic comes to London for the very first time. The full-scale Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North bring the magical sound of Broadway to the Coliseum. Set both on and off-stage during the production of a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading lady and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Throw in Fred's current paramour Lois Lane, her gambler boyfriend Bill - and a couple of gangsters who somehow get caught up in the show - and the stage is set for a funny and farcical battle of the sexes! A charming homage to the sparkling wit of Shakespeare and an irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre, Cole Porter's witty, jazz-inflected score features hit after hit, with show-stopping numbers including 'Another Op'nin' Another Show,' 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare,' 'Always True to You in My Fashion' and 'Too Darn Hot.' Bringing together performers from the worlds of both opera and the West End, with the incredible sound of the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North the magical sound of Broadway and the golden age of MGM musicals springs back to life on the Coliseum stage. "Irresistible" ★★★★★ The Telegraph "A cracking good time" ★★★★ Sunday Times A co-production with Welsh National Opera Music and lyrics by Cole Porter Book by Bella and Samuel Spewack Critical Edition by David Charles Abell and Seann Alderking

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strange mixture of styles, but a good production Kiss me Kate is probably my favourite musical of all times, so I had great expectations. Last time I saw it was at the Martin Beck on broadway in late August 2001, just a couple of weeks before 9/11... This current Opera North production was done in a more “operatic” style than usual, so we did not (with one notable exception) get the usual belting musical voices. The one exception was the very good Zoe Rainey as Lois and it created a rather unusual mixture of singing styles. But the production was generally good and some of the comedy business was handled in an interesting way. De Lang as Fred did not have enough of “Rhett Butler” about him, but his singing was good - and his tap dancing surprisingly so. The Coliseum is a great venue, so all-in-all it was a worthwhile evening out!
