What people are saying about Lucinda Williams

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Huge Let-Down I had been looking forward to seeing Lucinda Williams live for decades so, when I read online that she was gonna perform her classic "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" album live here in Birmingham at the Town Hall, I immediately booked two tickets for myself and my girlfriend. Unfortunately, my high expectations were not met. First of all, it was a seated gig and the athmosphere was very sedate, far from what one would expect at a Rock N Roll concert. The audience was mostly octuagenarian and reactionless. When the band hit the stage (late, after a few false starts) we were treated to a long, tedious prologue by Mrs. Williams herself, followed by a weak, mistimed version of the albums opening track "Right In Time". The intensity of the original recording was completely watered down by Williams bizarre scansion and general lame band playing. The bass was barely audible. This became the pattern for the night : a long, boring spoken intro (mostly uninteresting facts that anybody interested in Lucindas music would already be familiar with) segueing into another weak rendition of the albums tracks. Even classics like "Drunken Angel" or "Still I Long For Your Kiss" sounded maimed and bland given the sort of lifeless treatment the band imparted upon them. "I Think I Lost It", Lucinda sang in one of the records key tunes and, indeed, no words could have been more appropriate for this frankly substandard, almost amateurial performance. I truly wish I had stayed at home and listened to the album on my stereo. Instead, I have thrown 60-plus-pounds down the drain and, possibly, tainted the memory of a musical masterpiece forever. Thumbs down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still famous after all these years The attraction of the gig was of course Car Wheels complete plus a few other songs towards the end and the Bristol crowd loved very minute.Foe a Sunday evening the 02 Academy was rammed and after a wait for Lucinda to show up the time flew by. No support meant a 90 minute wait before anyone showed up on stage but probably better than any alternative arrangement. The 2 hour show paid off well. She played the famous LP from start to finish with little bit of a commentary between songs and was well supported by 3 Old Boys behind. Still tight in many ways it was full of stories from the Old West and worth the 5 hour round trip for me. Towards the end we even had a Clash classic but the gig was a tribute to a Country legend with a life to match. Lost count of the boyfriends/husbands she told us about but so what-enjoying life to the full.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant, y’know I love her albums but based on the music and the photos on album covers, I thought Lucinda would be quite a cold, hard personality. In fact she was warm, engaging, humble and vulnerable - great rapport with the audience, who acclaimed her like a true hero. The performance of the Car Wheels album was great, complete with fascinating background anecdotes, and the subsequent songs even better as Lucinda and the band really rocked out. Loved the performance, loved the performer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Car Wheels On A Gravel Road 20th anniversary tour of this icon album was brought to this Yorkshire backwater. Lucinda and her backing band, Buick Six, were on form to give a fantastic rendition of the album and additional numbers from her considerable catalogue. Thanks Lu for a memorable night.
