What people are saying about Nick Harper

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An intimate evening in with his boyhood heroes @58 Fordwych Road, Kilburn. Not a rogues gallery but a wall of fame - the early days of finger picking blues in the UK. Centered around the Les Cousins Club in Soho in the early Sixties, the 'folk' scene - importing the Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie playing and singing style onto the island. Nick Harper was there - albeit a little boy - centre stage holding his ukelele (or UK-lay-lee) left-handed way too young. Daddy Roy Harper was always his emuniensis. The voice and the style rooted in his paternal style, but - after playing a song by all of his heroes - Davie Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Sandy Denny etc - we intervalled, and then second half was to prove him an equal to all that heritage. Fearsome and fearless playing and emotive singing. A rare treat to hear him play two of his dad's songs. Our pleasure. He playfully offered his 'cheap new guitar' up for sale - which I happily bought and he signed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nick Harper Nick Harper is fantastic, have watched him on a lot of occasions, however the venue was not great ,middle class entitled crowd who even if there is a spare seat between party’s are not prepared to shuffle along to let you sit down ,and faced with having to stand then being told by venue staff you can’t stand there .tickets to seats ratio was not right . Numbered seats are better than open house .left after three songs could not put up with the clientele.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A “Creative Space” Set in a beautiful old church with surprisingly crisp and clear acoustics, this venue is perfect for the solo acoustic performances I saw here last night. Katie Spencer and Nick Harper both clearly enjoying what this space has to offer. This was for me the best I’ve ever seen of Nick Harper. He is on solid form right now and is a must see. So for St Mary’s to get him on is a bit of a coup. Katie Spencer is a young singer/songwriter and a very accomplished guitar player. She is definitely one to look out for. St Mary’s Creative Space is a beautifully intimate environment, moody lighting, fantastic sound and most of all very very friendly. The staff were lovely. If I have to make a criticism it will only be that from what I heard it was the only time in several peoples lives that they had seen a queu for the gents toilets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nick never disappoints First off, I wasn't expecting a support act, and the fiddle/guitar duo that played were unknown to me. However, they were very good; quality songwriting and great performance - a bonus. Nick Harper is consistently brilliant. He really has got it all - his songwriting is exemplary, and always has been, right back to his earliest released work. As the theme of the show highlights the '100 or so' songs under his belt, and the audience were invited to suggest material before the gig, we knew we were in for a treat - and so it proved. He always performs with passion and commitment; and Friday was no exception. As a non-musician, I can only imagine the skill required to play like he does; the three most impressive feats he pulled out of the hat on Friday were (in no particular order); the mastery of the detuning and retuning mid-song; the use of a very special tuning on the second guitar; and the 'echoplex' construction (don't know if we still call it that, but you probably know what I mean). Then there's his voice. There's a range that I imagine others would kill for, plus an expressiveness and sheer joyous energy of his performance. Like I said, the whole package, and then some! If you have the chance to go and see Nick, trust me, you will be impressed, moved and royally entertained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A rare, raw talent! My husband and I have been going to Nick Harper’s gigs for around 18 years. He is a born entertainer. With Nick you get both an exceptional musical talent and a comedian! He never disappoints, but just keeps producing more and more fantastic music and lyrics, which keeps his audience in raptures. Thanks for yet another amazing gig!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Breathtakingly awesome I don’t have the words to do this gig justice, but some of the woeds should include: viruoso guitarist, incredible voice, experimental and creative, loved by his audience and that was returned by performing a song unprepared for. I can’t recommend Nick Harper enough. I was mesmerised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intimate gig in incongruous setting In the 25 years I've been watching Nick he's not lost his dry ascerbic wit, or - vitally - his voice! Brilliant as ever, I bought the first album Light At The End Of The Kennel back in the day, and it was great to hear him play a couple of tracks from that album. And even greater to hear tracks from his latest album LIES! LIES! LIES!. Loved the song about Bolivia's president Evo Morales, and Money Tree. The venue - Kingskerswell Church - was an amazing venue for Nick. The acoustics really suited Nick's voice and his playing. He is a true poet.
