Masterful musicians of an Ozric Tentacles offshoot at a truly great intimate venue. The quality of the sound system was extremely high: crystal clear and loud but not distorting or with resonance problems. The bass was full and loud and could be felt strongly but without pointlessly making things vibrate all over the shop to ruin the rest of the sound. Seperation between the layers of sound was amazing and the panning was almost like having headphones on!! There were also thick pads where parts were all washing together deliberately. If you love music you will undoubtedly enjoy an Ozric Tentacles or Silas Neptune gig. Check out their music too it is state of the art - such great work from very talented musicians!
In more detail: The Silas Neptune support act was some of the best live music I have ever heard and being in such an intimate gig where you can see the instruments being played from a few feet away was incredible. Silas's work is innovative and daring but always very listenable and with a bad groove and mean bass! I have played synths for many years and found myself imagining how on earth did he get some of the funny detailed high end sounds. Silas's live guitar had several different tones and styles for different songs and it was really refreshingly varied. Although clearly a very capable musician Silas's playing was always enjoyable and never overstepping the noodling mark! The audience obviously all felt the same as I did and there was a really positive response and you could see and feel the enjoyment!
Nodens Ictus saw Ed Wynne take to the stage together with Silas. Ed is an uplifitingly brilliant musician and I adored the show. The sound was more ambient than the support acts but not the background pads only type. Ed's guitar and keyboards were excellently complemented by Silas. One of my favourite things about Ed's style is that with a few moves of the pitch bend wheel his keyboard sounds like an asian instrument. All the layers of the music twist and weave around each other so beautifully and the way the sections of the tracks shift are perfect, and often pleasantly unexpected but never crude. Just amazing - overused word but I really mean it. I cannot express how much Ed and Silas impressed me and seeing lots of other people clearly enjoying it so much too.
I bought a couple of CD's afterwards and realised Ed Wynn was standing next to me by the merchandise desk so I asked him to sign my cd. And clearly a lovely guy!
