What people are saying about Norma Waterson & Eliza Carthy with The Gift Band

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Highs for Eliza Carthy and the Gift Band I've seen the Carthy/Waterson band before in several combinations but this one at the Union Chapel was probably the best. In the end Norma could not make it through ill health and Eliza was visibly upset but she is a 'trooper' and with a shrug of her shoulders she drove the ensemble on into what would be a wonderful event for all. Regular members were all there including Eliza's father, Martin Carthy and a whole range of songs of joy, heartbreak, wonder and mirth sent the audience into rapture. With fantastic musicians and 2 more incredible female guest singers from Ireland and Scotland the variety of songs was wonderful. Eliza declared that these 2 guest singers were her mother's favourite singers and the reasons for that became obvious. As the concert went on we were all swept away by the 3 wonderful vocalists and a marvellous range of songs from comedy to sadness, from solos to stunning chorals. Eliza, of course kept the whole thing together with an excellent audience rapport adding a constant mischievous wit and encouraging us all to sing along. But that voice of her's does continue to develop and she sounds more like Norma at her marvellous best. There was great variety in the songs with one even dedicated to the late Professor Stephen Hawking. WHAT A CONCERT! From serious ballads to comedy and children's songs they delighted us.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An unexpected success Our first visit to the excllent venue of Union Chapel which included a pre concert meal in their Margins Cafe - good food / good value / good cause. The singers / musicians put on an entertaining and vibrant evening including some of the songs from the album ' Anchor ' and there was great empathy that Eliza's Mum was unable to make the album launch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great show despite Norma's absence. Wonderful performances in a beautiful venue. Disappointed that Norma Waterson wasn’t well enough to perform but the guest singers were terrific and Eliza gets better and better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic night Really sad that Norma Waterson couldn’t be there. Eliza and Martin and the band and other guest singers were amazing and paid a great tribute to Norma Waterson. First time We’ve seen Eliza hope it won’t be the last. Thanks for a great evening in a most spectacular venue.
