My favourite new discovery from Cambridge Folk Festival
I saw his name on the programme but only decided to go to see him between two other acts. What an amazing surprise. We stayed until the end of his set. His own songs were varied and well written. His rapport with the audience was excellent too. The musicians with him were excellent too and balanced out well. After watching several other acts, we decided to watch Beth Nielsen Chapman, only to discover that Robert was supporting her with lovely harmonies, some excellent harmonica playing and humour. The set had to be done with a very, very loud sound from a band on the other stage. He helped Beth keep going with humour and professional musicianship. His violin/mandolin player was also very good. I will look out for Robert again. Sadly, his gigs tend to be a bit far north for us at present but if he performs near Milton Keynes, Bedford, Oxford or Cambridge, I shall certainly book to see him. Maybe he could be on Main Stage 1 at Cambridge next year! He could certainly command a large audience.
