What people are saying about Roy Ayers

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Roy Ayers in Harpenden I love Roy Ayers and have followed him all my life. The first half was not good with him relying on the band more than him playing and facing with his back to the audience a lot of the time. The second half seem to improve but not the Roy Ayers i had seen at Ronnie Scotts a few years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great man I went to the show with 2 friends...oh what a fab show Master Ayres & his band put on. One of the best Jazz shows I've been to. Loved the venue too...the acoustic is amaxing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not half as good as he used to be ! Perhaps if I hadn't been to several Roy Ayers concerts at the Jazz Cafe over the past ten years, I might have enjoyed it more. Don't get me wrong, the majority of fans there probably enjoyed it, but compared with previous performances, this one lacked a lot. Roy, God bless him, is a legend, but I think age is catching up on him, and he now relies on other band members, particularly the keyboards guy to take centre stage, and although highly competent, doesn't have the carisma or stage presence of previous band members such as Ray Gaskins (Sax/keyboards/vocals) and Tony Smith (guitar). It was a very hot night, and perhaps Roy was feeling the heat - so much so that the concert ended, rather abruptly after barely an hour, having just began, the shortest version of 'Poo Poo La La' I have ever heard - and just walked off - and didn't come back on. Calls for an encore (which he usually does) produced the drummer coming back on saying Roy wasn't returning and that was the end of the concert. This produced several boos from the audience. I probably would go to another Roy Ayers show - I will just have to lower my expectations of him. Shame !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from our reunion well it had been 29yrs since I had seen the man Roy in London & to be reunited with him to hear him sing & play again was a real joy, & to see he's still got it going on firing on all cylinders, with him showing true authentic appreciation to the other musician's as he stood & watched & got lost in them playing as they were jamming... my squeeze (girlfriend) said to me: there's a lot of young people here (in their early 20's?) i said his music is ageless & will always sound young & it was good to see the younger generation appreciating true quality & class performing - the one & only original master blaster!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Roy Ayers Always worth seeing live. Unfortunately for the legend, the electronic Xylophone stopped working after 15 minutes - better with the X wood ! Techinical team need to do better to resolve show issues like this. Lively solid backing band filled in the gaps well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shame - No sound check, wrong venue, pushy crowd Bearing in mind how iconic & frankly elderly Roy is, what a shame that his show sounded TERRIBLE (pitchy joke of a xylophone), it was packed & jostling with aggressive crowd; small, dark & smoky in xoyo which should stick to being a nightclub. In stark contrast to the last times we’ve seen him at Ronnie Scott’s & Jazz Cafe which were just incredible experiences. Shame. Left early and listened to his once/honey sounds on the way home instead.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Legendary Roy Ayers Went to this event as a group of 4, excellent intimate venue so we were able to stand very close to Roy Ayers and his talented band. Great performance except for the technical fault with Roy’s vibraphone which meant he couldn’t play it much which was disappointing - this made things extremely hard work for the band who had to make up for it but they were excellent. Roy Ayers is the coolest 77 year old you are likely to meet!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Roy Ayers is a fantastic and great artist. The show was amazing and the music was good. A shame that the Jazz café wasn't very set with the technic and we could hear people from the restaurant upstairs chatting in the background which wasn't very respectful for the artist.
