Industrial Pop Meets Eurovision
Sophie is an artist I was not particularly familiar with knowing she had produced Hot Pink for Lets Eat Grandma and having made one of last years most fabulous YouTube videos ‘It’s OK to cry’, so I decided to see her. She put on not just a musical show but a wonderful theatrical performance. She had a thoughtful stage layout plus terrific lighting.
Her set started rather late at 10:45 and the crowd just before became silent briefly in anticipation of what was to come as the previous DJ set ended. Laser beams cut through the venue and smoke slowly filled the place and the crowd started to cheer, where was Sophie. She jested with us all drawing out her entrance for a good five minutes, would people collapse with the excitement? Her dancers appeared and then Sophie arrived carefully placing her purse on a stand, the crowd was going mental now! It then hit us, a wall of industrial low frequency sound howling through the audience and the place exploded. For the next 40 minutes the place was engulfed in a melange of industrial pop niceness with her two dancers accompanying her perfectly and then we were hit with a stunning rap sequence with two large rappers. She then left the stage and many thought that was that, however that purse was still on stage!
After a tortuous three minute wait Sophie reappeared with a costume change too and we had a magic encore that lasted another 5 minutes or so, it was all heavenly.
Support was three DJ sets from Lyzza who was so exciting half the audience were using their phones texting or watching cat videos followed by Skream who I though was much better and others obviously too as the phones went away. Then we had the final DJ Gayle San who seemed the most popular who took things down in frequency but really was not to my taste. I have heard much better DJ sets in the past so I an going to knock a star off the review which is a bit sad.
Overall an astonishing performance by Sophie and not surprisingly it was a full house.
