Who is Stormzy?

Stormzy is a British rapper from Croyden, London. His influences range from grime artists like Lethal Bizzle, Bruza, and D Double E to R&B singers like Frank Ocean, and Lauryn Hill. Stormzy released his EP Dreamers Disease in 2014. Later that year he attended the MOBO awards where he won Best Grime Act.

He was the first unsigned rapper to perform on Jools Holland's television show 'Later...with Jools Holland' where he performed the song 'Not That Deep' from Dreamers Disease.

He has since won British Album of the Year at the 2018 Brit Awards with his debut album 'Gang Signs & Prayer', reached number one in the UK charts with his single 'Vossi-Bop', and headlined at Glastonbury 2019.

He was placed at number 5 in the annual Powerlist 2020 due to his contributions towards music and activism. The following year he ranked as the third most influential Black Briton from his consistent advocacy against racial injustice and philanthropy. He has donated over 10 million to charities including founding the 'Stormzy Scholarship for Black UK Students' at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship covers the tuition costs for two students and maintenance grants for up to four years.

What's his background?

Stormzy started rapping at the age of 11. He first gathered the attention of the underground grime scene with his freestyle series 'WickedSkengMan' in 2013. His debut EP 'Dreamers Disease' contained 7 tracks including 'Not That Deep' which he performed on television show 'Later... with Jools Holland'. His final instalment to his WickedSkengMan series was released in 2015, as well as a studio version of his freestyle 'Shut Up' which debuted at number 18 in the UK chart. This was Stormzy's first ever top 40 hit, and the first freestyle in history to reach top 40.

His debut album was titled 'Gang Signs and Prayer', releasing in 2017 and reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album features multiple guest appearances including from the likes of Kehlani, Wretch 32, Ghetts and J Hus. The lead single for the album 'Big for Your Boots' was followed by 'Cold', 'Cigarettes and Cush' and 'Blinded by Your Grace Pt. 2'

He followed up the album release with singles 'Vossi Bop', 'Crown', 'Sounds of the Skeng', and 'Wiley Flow'. All the singles feature on his second album 'Heavy Is the Head'. 'Vossi Bop', the lead single for the album, became his first number one hit on the UK Singles Chart. 'Own It' was the fourth single from the album and is a collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy.

Set to be one of the most highly anticipated tours of 2020, Stormzy has today announced a huge 55-date ?H.I.T.H. World Tour'. With shows spanning across Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North America, UK & Ireland and Africa, the tour marks Stormzy's biggest live offering to date. Kicking off the tour in Dubai on February 7th and concluding in Africa in October, the tour will also see him make his solo debut at The O2, London for two nights on 3rd & 4th of September, marking his first solo shows in the capital since his 3-day stint at O2 Academy Brixton in May 2017! Subsequent to The O2 shows in London, Stormzy will grace the stages of 11 more arenas throughout the UK and Ireland, concluding at Bournemouth's international Centre on 22nd September.
