What people are saying about The Church Presents 'A Weekend Crusade'

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Church Australian Rock Band Weekend Crusade The weekend was unbelievable. The UK have missed out so much on the Church playing live here. So this weekend was a real payback and was well worth the wait. Me and my wife were also lucky enough to see them in Brighton at the Haunt but again we did have to travel from Manchester. (The last time they played in our home town was at the international 1990 so it still is a long wait but a special thanks for Sheffield another brilliant night and you are getting closer.) The Church must be one of the most hardest working bands out there. They gave everything day and night to the audience. The quality of their music is unbelievable they do have a real magic about them that can not be copied because it is so original. the film /documentaries were also brilliant, informative amusing and entertaining. The cost of the weekend ticket was a real bargain an unbelievable steal. But if you have to travel and stay in a hotel than that does make it really expensive but all worth it. The day shows gave us a chance to see the band individually perform and open up emotionally to the crowd and this worked brilliantly. Ian Haug came across such a nice guy and he performed brilliantly top individual performer for me. Tim Powles a bit tricky with the setting between songs but always amusing but again a real connection of emotion that was so warm and special a genuine connection Tim explained that he lost his mum when he was young and a lot of years later his dad said one night "how much his mum would have been so proud of him today" and how this statement was was something that he unknowingly must have been waiting to hear most of his life , very emotional and thanks for sharing. Peter Koppes on the piano (not guitar) but this offered us another insight and again real emotion about the songs such unassuming talented guy. . I think Steve Kilbey is brilliant and such a hard worker and he gave everything, but to be honest I just felt at times he was a little over exposed because he repeated some of the songs from Saturday accompanied with the piano on Sunday . I think a bit less would have been a lot more and I feel bad saying this because to me he is the Church, but I think there lay the problem because he took all the responsibility hard work and effort with double shifts to deliver such a non stop weekend. I would personally preferred to have the chance for a brief meet and greet and see him a bit more relaxed and also to get his autograph for his brilliant book something quiet peculiar which would have made our weekend even more special. The night time shows were just amazing and Steve who is such a brilliant bass player / vocalist again gave it all and leads the way within the perfect setting of a unique band the Church and this true magic is a privilege to see and hear . For me the Church should be proud to play a mixture of the old songs with the new to demonstrate the breadth of the bands song writing talent. Do the Rolling Stones refuse to play "satisfaction " or Bruce Springsteen refuse to play Born to Run it doesn't make them irrelevant when they also play the new stuff to attract a newer audience. From my first encounter with the Unguarded Moment song through to Another Century from their latest album for me the magic continues my list of songs would vary with the most hardened Church fans and even the band but check out the following: Unguarded Moment, Metropolis, Your Still Beautiful Baby, Under The Milky Way, Destination, You Took, Miami (Brilliant best song ever), Another Century these songs have something special /magical and I know I have missed loads but these are the top killer songs for me. Please check out The Church songs and even better see them play live if you can!! they are the most underrated band in Rock History.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Church: still beautiful and profound The Church were the first band I ever saw play live in March 1983, supporting Dire Straits on the Love Over Gold tour in Sydney. How they are better over 35 years later is beyond me. It goes to show how consistently good they are when material is played from their entire catalogue (I think 25 albums); and it all fits. See these guys when they visit your neck of the woods!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Up close and personal There are not many Church fans in the UK and tours can be few and far between so this was a real treat 2 full days with our favourites. Steve and Ian did solo sets on Saturday afternoon followed by the UK premier of Steve's Something Quite Peculiar film before a full blown gig in the evening playing tracks from Starfish and Hologram Of Vaal (among others). Sunday was similar with Tim and Peter before The Blurred Crusade album in the evening. I am sure we all feel we know the band better now (especially the nervous new boy Ian who won over fans of the traditional group line up). Looking forward to them returning in October.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best band ever??? A weekend of the Church and solos from the band members. It was an opportunity for fans to get insights into the group that you could not imagine and it was fantastic. So things didn't run to time, so what, it was quirky and the band and the solo sets were awesome. Big shout out to the venue staff, did a great job, made everyone feel welcome.
