More Information about The Grinning Man

Following its hugely successful premiere at Bristol Old Vic, the critically acclaimed new musical The Grinning Man has transferred to the West End and "demands to be seen" (The Times).

From Tony Award-winning director Tom Morris (War Horse), Kneehigh writer Carl Grose and featuring "an outstanding score" (Sunday Times) by Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler, The Grinning Man is a magical reimagining of the classic novel by Victor Hugo (Les Miserables).

A strange new act has arrived at the fairground. Who is Grinpayne and how did he get his hideous smile? Paraded as a freak, then celebrated as a star, only the love of a sightless girl can reveal his terrible secret.

Set in a fantastical world created by designer Jon Bausor (Bat Out of Hell), and brought to life with the "astonishing puppetry" (What's on Stage) of Gyre & Gimble, the original War Horse puppeteers, The Grinning Man invites you to be seduced by the darkness at the Trafalgar Studios.

★★★★ "Defies theatrical convention by keeping its hand on its heart and its tongue in its cheek." The Guardian ★★★★ "Blackly comic brilliance." Daily Telegraph ★★★★ "Weird and wonderful, a dark delight." Daily Telegraph "An extraordinary amalgam of fairytale, puppetry, romantic drama and black comedy" StageTalk

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite show ever With a Tim Burton/Rocky horror feel this show was so funny but beautifully crafted with an amazing singing cast. Dea as the understudy particularly stood out for me, her voice of an angel. The set design, puppetry and prosthetics just fantastic. I cannot rate this show highly enough please see it I beg you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent show! Well worth seeing!! Didn't know much about The Grinning Man & hadn't been to the theatre in ages - glad to report it was brilliant & thanks to my niece for suggesting it - we both loved it. Reminded me I should go and see more theatre! Innovative in design, brilliant cast, well written songs & score, a really thoughtful , amusing and well told story presented in an immersive and unique way. Trafalgar Studios is a good size theatre too - it creates an intimate experience for cast & audience alike. We were sat right in the second row stage right- brilliant seats!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique and strangely moving I really wasn’t sure what to expect as I settled down in my seat - tatty bunting, peeling paintwork. À macabre set and even more macabre characters. But very soon the story and the characters grasped my imagination and interest. The puppetry was very skilful and it became difficult to remember that they were not real. I was transported and thanks to the skill of the players and the script, I found myself touched and a little teary eyed at the last scene. Bravo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Grinning Man in The Audience I really enjoyed this production. It was funny, very well acted, I loved the staging and the puppetry was very impressive and skillfull. Some of the language was rather colourful but I found it very amusing, the comic timing was spot on and, for me, it helped enhance the humour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful comically moving piece of theatre A creative set presenting fantastic performances of song, puppetry, dance, comedy and dialogue which draws you in to a dark world of moving relationships. It entranced me from start to finish and was the best bit of theatre I've ever seen. FANTASTIC!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inventive version on the Hugo story but too much pantomime Great set and cast. Music so so. Let down by the ‘cheap’ panto gags.
