More Information about The Merchant Of Venice

Award Winning Outdoor Theatre Company Illyria brings Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice to Westminster Abbey - Dean's Yard. The Merchant of Venice is a funny play that deals with serious issues - in particular the keeping of promises. Wealthy Antonio borrows money from Shylock, and both are so confident about his paying it back that they jokingly adopt a ridiculous agreement: that Antonio will give Shylock a pound of his flesh should he default. Then events conspire against him so that he cannot repay the loan. Meanwhile Bassanio risks everything in the hope of winning the hand of Portia in marriage. Admittedly he succeeds - but when she gives him a ring to keep, and he is compelled to give it away, what future for their domestic bliss? Shakespeare's great courtroom drama is by turns gripping, funny, romantic and thought-provoking. International award-winning Illyria promise a production to keep you on the edge of your seat! Now in its 27th year, Illyria has delighted audiences the length and breadth of the UK, and in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, the United States and Canada performing some of the most well-loved productions on offer. The company has won 4 international est Performance awards and attracted numerous "5-star" and "Critics' Choice" reviews for the lively clarity of its approach to Shakespeare's plays, the high quality of its family shows and the refreshingly quirky originality of its English classics adaptations and Gilbert & Sullivan musicals. "Illyria has given more performances to more people across a wider area than any other open-air touring theatre company, proudly maintaining professional Equity-compliant productions for over a quarter of a century. We're really pleased to be performing at Westminster Abbey and can't wait see how the audience reacts!" says Oliver Gray. Please Note: There will be a Security and bag check on arrival so please leave time for this. There is no cloakroom on site. Refreshments will be available on site. There are toilet facilities in the grounds of the Abbey Guest are welcome to bring low backed seating/rugs and picnics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Event Was a great show - actors were really good - only downside was that it rained and we were outdoors but I came prepared - waterproofs galore

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor effort A slap-stick style pantomime of Shakespeare which showed little respect for the integrity of the work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great to see inside Abbey gardens We went to this event expecting an inside show like last year but were delighted to be in the garden watching a small set of the Rialto bridge and 5 energetic players. Talented actors; how they remember which part they are up to is incredible. Most enjoyable evening

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Picnic & Shakespeare, what else do you need? Great setting - Held at the abbey square, surrounded by historic buildings. NOTE, it is outside so bring blanket and jumper. Small cast, great performance (each actor played multiple roles, really great). Perfect summer evening fun.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor event not with the local pub carpark I took my wife to see a professional production of Shakespear but got this lot. They pretend they are funny but beware. Poor speeches poor movement and no idea of the rythym of the text. DONT GO.
