What people are saying about The National

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! An outstanding gig - love it to have been in the cockpit again but still fab!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still a bewildering live experience. This was a concert of two halves - the tracks from the new album with the augmented band - particularly the two female vocalists who feature on the album were astonishing - as good as anything I’ve ever seen..really. The challenge for me - as it was the last time I saw them is that live they either cannot or choose not to replicate the nuanced and complex sounds of their previous albums. The albums are led by Matt Berringers vocals and Scott Devendorfs drumming. Live it’s the average, loud and repetitive sound of the Desner Brothers guitars - both of whom are able to create beautiful music but can’t deliver it live. Songs that on albums are reflective, sonically varied and musically engaging are reduced to the same formula of chugging repetitive guitar. They obviously can do it differently - as demonstrated by the show closing totally acoustic Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks. So really - 5 for the new material and 3 for songs like Terrible Love, I need my girl etc Exception here The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness which didn’t suffer from being bludgeoned. The National is now 2 bands - guess they need to work out which one they want to be.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Love the band, not so keen on the venue! Great set but venue sadly lacking in atmosphere. Never been to an arena gig that sterile.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from “We need a towel - right now” We had been looking forward to seeing The National for 4-5 years. VENUE : excellent, STAGE SET : we had tickets in block 211 , they were the ‘best available ‘ in May. We had a great view of the back of the video screens, as did about 33% of the audience. No worries the band don’t put on a show as such. PERFORMANCE: insufferable singer obsessed with controlling everything. Kept stopping the show to show how much of a nice guy he was...” do you need medical assistance over there”, that lady needs a hug”, “ I’ve spilled my beer get me a towel “ ROCK AND ROLL!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Despite a bit of a dodgy sound to start with (kick drum too loud) this was still absolutely brilliant. The addition of the the 3 female singers has added another dimension to their sound. The latest record is a massive return to form and it goes over live brilliantly. Some old classics got aired with typical Matt Berninger gusto and the singalong to Vanderlyle at the end left me with a lump in my throat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great band great cenue Very well organised and really good venue, one of my favourites in Manchester. Plenty of room to move around and easy to see the stage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A bright white beautiful heaven hanging over me Castlefield is always magical. When you add The National, well it can only be described as Heaven. There were a few naughty ruffians but the night is one for the memory bank to be sure.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Played far too many new tunes I absolutely love the National but they played 12 tunes from their new album last night in Manchester which was a farce. Still some great moments at a great venue in the Castlefield Bowl, but a very underwhelming gig this time unfortunately. I understand bands’ needs and desires to play and get new tunes out there but this went way too far.
