More Information about The Tempest at Westminster Abbey

The magician Prospero is marooned on an island with his daughter Miranda. With the assistance of a powerful air spirit he keeps in servitude, he conjures up a storm to shipwreck his enemies on the shore of the island. Inexorably they are driven towards the centre of the island to answer to Prospero - until Prospero learns that in spite of everything Miranda has met and fallen in love with Ferdinand, the son of his enemy. Which is greater - his thirst for revenge or his aptitude for forgiveness? In their 28th open-air touring season, and renowned all over the world for their clarity, quality and ingenuity, Illyria return to their home-turf: Shakespearean comedy. The play, believed to be the last that Shakespeare wrote single-handedly, is lyrical, thought-provoking and raucously funny. More than 400 years after it was written it still has the capacity to surprise! Illyria is an intrepid band of five actors who perform Shakespeare's plays, entirely uncut, direct from the First Folio, the most authoritative edition of Shakespeare's plays. It's swift, it's polished and it's spoken beautifully (uniquely among open-air touring theatre companies Illyria's artistic director has published articles on verse-speaking) - and scholars on both sides of the Atlantic agree that Illyria's performance style is the most authentically Elizabethan to be seen. Since 1992 they have performed on what feels like every patch of grass from Land's End to John O-Groats - and also in Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, USA and Canada. They are the only UK open-air touring company to have won no less than 4 international awards, and have a well-deserved reputation for being, quite simply, the best. Booking Period: 7 - 8 August 2019 Running Time: 2 hours 10 minutes (including a 20 minute interval) Age Restrictions: 6+ Venue: Westminster Abbey, Deans Yard, The Sanctuary, Westminster, London SW1P 3PA

What people are saying about The Tempest at Westminster Abbey

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A good venue We are huge fans of the Bard, however this was a slightly confusing rendition so make sure you are familiar with the play and characters beforehand. Impressed with the actors remembering their lines, however, the very basic stage and set was a let down. We were hoping for a more grandeur feel to it, given this was at Westminster Abbey. We were ok with being sat on the grass with a picnic blanket and were all for a summer night of entertainment however, the audience - we were not so impressed with. We had to move at the interval as we had our view blocked by people who constantly moved and exercised on the grass rather than pay attention. This lead to a lack of full enjoyment. You would not get this behaviour in an indoor theatre. Well done to the cast who did their best to bring Shakespeare to the masses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous show and Venue Venue was an oasis in the middle of a chaotic London. Toilets and non alcoholic refreshments on hand. Many took in picnics. Watched a fabulous show. One of the best I've seen. Would definitely return and recommend

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great event, in a brilliant location (some issues with seating however) This event was great overall, the play was performed very well and the actors were very good. The weather even stayed brilliant. The location was perfect because it was quiet even though it was in central London and was secluded and sheltered enough so we didn't feel the wind at all. One thing I didn't like - nowhere in the event listing or in the subsequent emails before the event did it say if there were chairs provided or we have to bring our own. I didn't find out until 1 hour before I had to leave for the event (and I found it out from another ticket listing). Good thing we did, so that we could grab a picnic blanket to sit on. Also, when we got to the venue, usually in open air venues, the organisers make a separation between people with blankets and people with chairs so that the ones with chairs can sit further back not to obstruct the view. But that wasn't the case. So we had to sit very much on the side with our blanket because everyone with chairs was so far forward that if we sat behind them we wouldn't see anything. Overall, I would really recommend the event but I hope that these two issues will be fixed going forward.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The School Play? This was a very amateur attempt. This group may have many admirers, but it didn't work for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from living history Shakespeare would have been familiar with the abbey and the event was special because of that but the sound had a echo which meant a lot of dialogue was lost if you were not at the front. However the reading of the play was original and the experience not to be missed.

It was beautiful and we were blessed with good weather. What a wonderful performance by very talented actors! I will definitely go again if the opportunity presents itself!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful evening spent in Westminster Abbey Went to see this last night. Dragged hubs along although it wasn’t really his thing. But Illyria worked their magic and he loved it !! What a truely talented troupe they are. The production was slick and original keeping faith with the 1st folio. Amazing production in a wonderful location. My only gripe was not knowing that seating was not provided. It would have been helpful to have that info when booking. Some fold up seats were available but I had to literally wrestle them from the rottweiler who was guarding them viciously. Her behaviour was totally unnecessary as she kept many stacked under the tree refusing to allow people to use them. but hey ho. She didn’t spoil the night. And her behaviour was nothing to do with Illyria.
