What people are saying about Thundercat

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bop, bop, boop, booop, bop, boob, bob......booob Thundercat is no doubt a virtuoso, his recent album a staggering work of joy. Yet the apprehension felt as I approached the venue was well founded. I thought it would go one of two ways; a revelatory performance of some incredible work, or self indulgent jazz noodling. It started with the former, slipped into and stayed in the latter. Four compatative jazz musician competing as to how many atonal and arythmic notes they could smash into existence in 15 minutes was not fun. I went home early. The highlight of the evening was finding a free parking space within 100 yards of the venue. Meow

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good show - Wrong set list for me! The show itself was good, if not spectacular. I've seen Thundercat previously supporting Flying Lotus and enjoyed those experiences more. The set list chosen for this gig manly came from the latest album 'Drunk', which while good, is not my favourite. That honour still goes to 'The Golden Age of Apocalypse'. I felt that for a large part of the show he played tracks that work well on the albums, but didn't really bump that hard in stage performance, apart from the 'hits' such as 'Heartbreaks + Setbacks', 'Them Changes' and so on. That said, the Cat and his band are freakishly amazing. The drummer was on another planet and made it all look effortless. Thundercat himself was good as always, his personality coming across really well as he joked with the crowd throughout the show. He showed incredible patience and brought levity to the situation when his guitar amp blew! He laughed it off and was a source of entertainment right up until the technical team fixed it and the show continued. It must be said, however, that there was a noticeable enhancement in the richness/fullness of his bass sound AFTER this happened, which was well into the show. Thundercat has a sweet voice, which has only gotten better over the years. I don't know if it's because of where I was situated in the venue, but his vocals were, to me, let down by the muffled sound system, which did not give clarity to his vocals. It admittedly got better as the show went on, but for a large part of the show the sound, to me, was not as good as it could have been. Mr Bruner has obviously raised his profile considerably since 2011, attracting a full house that was as mixed in terms of age, race and culture as I've seen at a gig of this kind in a while. The atmosphere was great throughout as a result and as I said earlier, his wit and warmth, along with his incredible music and plating chops went some way to creating it. I've seen him a few times now, so I'm not sure if I'll go again, but would definitely recommend that folks who enjoy his work see him at least once.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bass master class Thundercat was awesome. His fingers dance over the fretboard of his massive, six-string bass so rapidly that the audience is mesmerised. And he's so funky. Couldn't stop twitching in time to the beat. And the drummer. Frantic thumping, whacking out intricate beats beneath the keyboard player and violinist. A brilliant night.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Exciting gig slightly spoilt by poor sound I've seen Thundercat on Youtube hundreds of times and was really looking forward to this gig. We had seats on level 1 - the view was perfect and the atmosphere fantastic as was the light show. I'm in awe of Thundercat's skill as a bassist and love his intricate style. Unfortunately the gig wasn't as good as it might have been because for a large part of the first hour we were assailed by a wall of excessive volume where the drums and electric piano seemed to drown out everything else in particular Thundercat's guitar work. Bizarrely after an on stage speaker failed, (the performance stopped while it had to be replaced), the sound was much better balanced and the gig ended in style. Overall this was an exciting gig to be at. Thundercat himself is massively charismatic and talented, as are his band and I will be after tickets again next time he plays here. It's just a shame this performance wasn't as great as it could have been.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from How a sound engineer can hurt a concert Every single member of the band gave it all. Miguel Atwood on violin was an excellent addition and surprise. However, the people responsible for the sound in this gig did not live up to the standards of this performance. In most of the concert keys and violin were too low in the mix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2nd time seeing Thundercat this year, 2nd time amazed Once again Thundercat and the rest of the gang have amazed me again! I saw him first in Dublin and just had to see him again as soon as possible. This time was even better than the last with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson joining the crew to expand the texture and frequency range of the whole performance. This has been one of my favourite shows of a year filled with gigs. When Thundercat came back on for the encore to play 'Lotus and the Jondy' I was overjoyed because he didn't perform it at the last show I went to. Thundercat is a musician that anyone can enjoy, a casual audince can enjoy the catchy melodies and fantastic harmonies and people with a musical background can really appreciate the skill and level of musicality that is happening on stage. Overall absolutely outstanding performance packed to the brim with musical expertise, jazzy improvisation and comedy. Thundercat has one of the coolest stage presences I've ever seen! I can't wait until I see him again.
